Often, I find myself on a fool's errand, and as Braden facetiously put, "A fool is right twice a day." The trip to the USVI had but one real target, Chilabothrus granti. We only had two nights to do it, and no solid locality data was available to us. The first night was disheartening. All of the habitat we had scoped out seemed to fit the description outlined in our only field guide, yet no boas were to be seen.

At the end of the first night, we gathered ourselves and ranked the sites based on very loose parameters. Papers saying they prefer non-stony soils, that they were only observed at head level (Talk about observation bias!) had been discussed into oblivion.

We set out to the site we deemed the best, another fruitless effort. Moving on to our plan b, a ruin of a resort. The first night, this cliffside castle yielded very little other than a tarantula, but we saw a good amount of Tillandsia urtriculata, the giant airplant also native to Florida. Our reading mentioned the importance of Bromeliaceae for daytime refuge. They also mentioned the impenetrableness of the habitat these boas prefer, in which this site fit the bill. After hiking the path and then beating the bush we decided to walk the dilapidated road one last time.

On the way back up to the car, we froze. Hanging from a woody vine, we spotted a small (~2ft) boa, a few feet above head level. The feeling was unmatched, we tripped over our words, and my hands shook. We managed to see one, in the USVI, on a fool's errand.

One of the most stunning members of its genus Eleutherodactylus lentus, the "Mute" Coqui, was thought to be endemic to the US Virgin Islands, but a small population has been found in Puerto Rico. Despite their common name, they do have a weak call. We found these two individuals while searching for velvet worms.
