From parking lot to living landscape 🌱

Our terrace was designed around nature, functionality and performance. Once an industrial parking lot, the project, led by @werftgardens, transformed the space into a living landscape.

The result is a thriving green sanctuary with cleaner air and increased biodiversity. For guests of the Taproom, that means a shade-drenched beer garden to gather in and stay a while.

A Different Take on Residential Minimalism The project House Avala approaches residential architecture through simplicity, adaptability and a close relationship with the landscape. Rather than designing a house as a sealed object, TEN Studio creates a compact living environment set near Belgrade, Serbia, that constantly shifts between interior and exterior.

The architecture is deliberately restrained: simple volumes, raw and natural materials, large openings and minimal detailing allow the construction itself to become part of the aesthetic. Full-height openings can completely transform the relationship between inside and outside, making the house feel larger and more fluid.

The project was a local collaboration of the contractor-owner, responding to available materials, local skills and the realities of construction. This gives the house a sense of authenticity that contrasts with highly polished, image-driven contemporary architecture.

There is something almost positively primitive about its modernism - its return to basic architectural ideas covering shelter, material, light, landscape and human scale. The result is a house that feels contemporary while making space for nature and human.

Contemporary Architecture meets Sports Hall

The Račice Sports Hall in Vodice, Croatia, is a great example of how contemporary architecture can become much more than just a place for sports - by just letting it happen.

One of the smartest design decisions was using the site’s natural slope. The changing rooms, storage areas, and technical spaces are tucked beneath the entrance plaza, allowing the main sports hall to remain open, simple, and visually clean - making it easy to move through the building.

Exposed concrete, steel, and gabion walls filled with local stone reference the region’s traditional dry-stone walls while expressing a contemporary construction approach.

A defining architectural feature is the covered outdoor walkway that wraps around the building. Inspired by the traditional Mediterranean portico, it creates shaded spaces and naturally softens the boundary between the interior and exterior.

Prefabricated concrete façade panels filter the strong Mediterranean sunlight, reducing heat while allowing natural light and views throughout the building.

The project shows how practical engineering, thoughtful planning, and local architectural identity can come together to create a building that serves both its users and the city.

Designed by NOP Studio, the building was imagined under architect Ivan Galić as a community hub where sports, public life, and everyday activities come together. Instead of standing out as an isolated object, the hall blends into the existing sports complex and creates new public spaces around it.

Jedinstvena svojim oblikovanjem, proizašla iz zahtjevnog terena i odvažnosti vlasnika da se upuste u projekt baš na tom mjestu.

Nagib terena odredio je i tehnologiju gradnje. Iako u industriji često korištena kod obiteljskih kuća ovo je prava rijetkost.

Podloga u stručnim znanjima iz projektiranja konstrukcija bila je od ključne važnosti za finalni rezultat.

A former construction waste dump in Croatia just became the foundation for one of the most thoughtful workplaces we've seen this year.

In the village of Dubrovčan, northwest of Zagreb, architects were handed a damaged site — years' worth of dumped construction debris. Instead of erasing that history, they worked with it, remediating the waste and reshaping it into three gentle mounds that now organize the entire plot, guiding pedestrian paths and tucking technical and production spaces right into the landscape.

Rising above those mounds is the project's centrepiece: a single-storey, disk-shaped building wrapped around a circular atrium. Inside, offices, meeting rooms, and informal work niches open toward the views beyond, while the atrium itself holds the reception, a presentation hall, an auditorium, and even a rooftop running track reached by a spiral staircase.

The real ingenuity is structural: prestressed concrete slabs and angled columns create such generous spans that interior partitions can be reconfigured almost endlessly — flexibility built right into the building's bones.

It's a reminder that sustainable architecture isn't only about materials — it's about letting a site's past shape a smarter, more adaptable future.

The success of a landscape is not measured only by how it looks. It is also measured by how people use it.

The Garden Brewery was conceived as a flexible outdoor environment where comfort takes precedence over formal expression.

Shade, air movement, vegetation and temperature, shape the experience of the space more than any predetermined programme.

Visitors gather beneath the canopy, remain longer during summer months, and occupy the garden in ways that were never prescribed by design.

The intention was not to create a finished image.

It was to create conditions for people and nature to coexist comfortably over time.

Kad je @3lhd preuzeo projekt novog akvarija i muzeja rijeka u Karlovcu imao je tri ključna zadatka: omogućiti novo gradsko žarište na desnoj obali Korane, afirmirati šetnicu i stvoriti bezvremensku turističku atrakciju.

U centru objekta formirao je prostor trga iz kojeg se granaju tri glavna pješačka pravca, dijeleći akvarij na tri volumena; izložbeni prostor, čitaonicu s caffe barom i uredski dio. Prema rubovima parcele objekti su gotovo nevidljivi – arhitekti su krovove i stražnja pročelja prekrili zemljom kako bi ih stopili s okolišem.

Izložbeni postav vodi posjetitelje kroz cijeli život krške rijeke. Spuštajući se rampom koja vijuga poput riječnog toka, promatraju podvodni svijet iz različitih perspektiva, slušaju zvukove rijeke, ulaze u špiljski ambijent s endemskim vrstama, prolaze kroz podvodni tunel te završavaju među močvarnim staništima, slapovima i sedrenim barijerama.

The Garden Brewery project began with a simple question:

What happens when asphalt is removed and we let nature return?

Located on a former industrial parking lot in Zagreb, the project transforms a sealed surface into a living landscape that cools, infiltrates water, supports biodiversity, and creates more comfortable conditions for nature and people.

Rather than starting with form, the project began with soil, water, vegetation, and time.

Today, what was once asphalt functions as a beer garden, gathering space, habitat, and climate-responsive landscape.

In a warming climate, landscape can no longer be understood as decoration. It is the foundation of healthier, cooler, and more resilient places to live.

'Viktor Kovačić' Award for re-GENERATOR!
On Saturday, 4 July 2026, at Maksimir Park in Zagreb, the Croatian Architects' Association opened its Annual Exhibition of Architectural Achievements and presented awards for the most outstanding works by Croatian architects completed in 2025.
The Annual "Viktor Kovačić" Award, the highest recognition for the most outstanding architectural achievement across all fields of architectural practice in 2025, was presented to MVA for the re-GENERATOR Centre for Urban Culture in Zabok.
A heartfelt thank you to the Expert Council of the Croatian Architects' Association, the City of Zabok, the Regenerator Association, and everyone involved in the project whose dedication and collaboration made this achievement possible!
