“bully” has surprised us in many more ways than one

taking a closer look at this album’s production, it becomes clear just how many legendary samples ye pulled in to create this project. so here we are covering em

we posted about hiphop’s crazy sample game this year at scale yesterday, and especially with projects like “the fall-off.” this is another album adding to a stacked year

the album starts off with a crazy sample, interpolating “hyaena” off travis scott’s “utopia.” not only is this a great sample off an already great opener, but such a cool moment to see the “teacher” sampling the “student.” almost like a full circle moment for the two of them, especially travis

also got some crazy experimentation on “last breath” where ye speaks spanish… we’ve seen in the past how this can waver but i think it honestly works really well here. feels pretty natural alongside peso pluma

one of the commercial highlights already off this album has proven to be “father” which samples “heavenly father you’ve been good.” the pitched down sample of johnnie frierson works so well alongside the drums and makes for both a really emotional and energetic song. reminds me of something like “modern jam” by travis with that continuous beat

some other standout tracks on here include a stevie wonder sample on “white lines”and “mama’s favorite” with a recording from his mother

what’s your favorite sample off the album? thoughts on bully overall? who or what else would you like to have seen off the project?
