Come explore, learn, and experience local history in new ways!

Each year, the La Jolla Historical Society presents 3 original exhibitions that bring together history, art, culture, science, and lived experiences to connect the past with the present.

We offer more than 35 public programs annually, including lectures, tours, school partnerships, family activities, youth summer programs, and special events. These programs create opportunities to help visitors of all ages explore the creative process, connect with the artists, and deepen their understanding of the works on display.

We also celebrate La Jolla through signature annual events, including the La Jolla Secret Garden Tour and the La Jolla Modernism Home Tour & Architecture Week.

This is 40! ✨To celebrate this milestone, I brought together some of my favorite people from different chapters of my life for a long weekend in Acapulco — inspired by the original lifestyle photographer Slim Aarons, the golden age of Mexico’s original home of the Jet Set, and the idea that maybe a little old-school glamour, chaos, and human connection still has a pulse.

Acapulco has been through a rough stretch these past years, but this weekend felt like a reminder of what made the city legendary in the first place: music echoing over the bay, cliffside sunsets, long lunches, mezcal, disco, and the beautiful madness of people fully alive together.

Huge thanks to everyone who made Marko-Pulco possible! There were countless memories but unfortunately IG limits us to just 20 pics per post!

Exhibition opening tonight! Our Athenaeum Faculty & Staff Exhibition opens this evening, celebrating the artists who are at the heart of our organization.

Join us on Saturday, 5–8 PM, during the @barrioartcrawl, for the opening reception and explore a dynamic range of work by Athenaeum teaching faculty and staff. The exhibition features a wide mix of mediums—including painting, printmaking, ceramics, illustration, book arts, and more—and reflects the Athenaeum’s ongoing commitment to fine arts education and the shared passion for the arts that infuses every part of our institution.

The exhibition is on view in the newly refreshed Palmer Gallery, which was updated with a grant by @prebysfound.

One thing I love: Hayden, even on the Big Shirt Dog Bite morning. Happy birthday, very glad you didn’t have fast acting necrosis or rabies like you kept saying you did.

Explore using stop motion animation to tell a story! In 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨: 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘍𝘪𝘭𝘮𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 with Emily Grenader (@just__emily), children ages 5–10 will create their own characters, backgrounds, and sets using drawing, painting, collage, and even found objects. After storyboarding and planning, students will use photography and audio recordings to bring their story to life.

About the teacher: Emily Grenader is an artist and arts educator living in San Diego. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, San Diego. Emily uses various mediums in her artwork and enjoys sharing a multidisciplinary perspective with students. Her work has been published and exhibited across the country.
