11 x 14 in Pencil. This was a fun maintain skills drawing that allowed me to still push myself a bit. I know I say this every time, but moving forward I want to incorporate more color. It’s happening trust me!

Oh, Icarus
.
.
.
18x24in charcoal. I really enjoyed creating this piece. I typically avoid drawing bodies—too many muscles and details—which is exactly why I needed to do a piece like this. Eliminating complacency and a fear of bumps and challenges is my goal for this year. Why be good when you can be great.

this was a “treat yourself” piece because while I was engaging with a new perspective, I used my comfort medium: charcoal. This was definitely a challenge nonetheless, though. I had to redo the nose like ten times and the hair was not hairing initially. I did have so much fun drawing the eyes per usual heheh. Hope yall enjoy. 11x14in charcoal.

this piece was filled with so many lessons. I learned about color theory—who knew red washed out blue??? I also learned that pastels stop blending after a while. Texture is fun tho right. Anywayyyy, we learn, we grow, we persist.

finding calm in the chaos.
.

11x14 charcoal portrait. This was a pain in my BUTT. Like there were multiple moments in which the art that was supposed to serve as a stress reliever only further contributed to my stress and frustration. This was definitely a piece where I had to trust the process and be along for the journey, reimagining my mistakes as new and beautiful additions to the portrait. Hope yall enjoy !

David’s cousin, perhaps
.
.
.
This was an attempt at recreating the statue of David as a drawing. Definitely pushed me !! The angles, the facial expression, the hand (always sigh). While I really struggled to find the motivation to complete this—I think in part because it was such a push for me artistically—I am so very proud of myself for sticking with it and creating something I’m pleased with. Here’s to constant learning.

When it comes to classical art, I’ve found that it’s so rare that black people are represented as figures that aren’t tied to enslavement. So, here is my reimagining of the Mona Lisa with a bit of color. Black is beauty. Black is grace. Black is art.

happy black history month

This year my goal is to artistically challenge myself. More color. More texture. More contorted bodies and faces.

Ceaseless Cycle.
.
.
18x24in. This project pushed me—I’m still growing accustomed to drawing bodies and non-humans. Facial expressions (especially those from unique vantage points) have always been a challenge, but I’m proud to have grown during this process. I used charcoal and a soft pastel for the snake’s eye, which is a light blue if you zoom in.

the passage
.
.
This is the largest piece I’ve worked on (18 x 24 in) which was challenging, frustrating, and inexplicably rewarding. I also decided to leave all of the smudges, eraser marks, and minute mistakes as a reminder of this journey. Be sure to check in as I (potentially) add more to the piece.
