“I distinctly recall the moment I decided that I was finally ready to move from New York to a warmer place and not just fantasize about it anymore. It was about 5pm but already dark outside. The temperature was in the single digits. I was clearing our driveway with the snowblower and the bitter cold wind was whipping the snow right back into my face and down my scarf. My frustration brought me to tears. My husband and I had considered the idea of moving before, but this time I knew it was no longer a maybe; it was a definite yes.”

👉🏼 What is “place” and why should dogs know it?
🐩 “Place” is teaching your dog a specific settling behavior such as “down” on a target such as a mat, towel or bed.
🐾TIPS
🐩 Once foundations are reliable, add in the 3D’s, distance, duration, distractions
🐩 Moving the target in a variety of areas teaches them that the behavior happens whenever the target is present no matter where and when that is
🐩 This is fantastic for outings such as someone’s house, a sports event, a coffee shop or brewery

👉🏼 All dogs, especially anxious ones, should learn to have this settling skill set.
👉🏼 This is useful if you need to replace unwanted behavior such as door dashing, jumping, counter surfing and more.
👉🏼 Teaching them to settle on a target and making it more fun and rewarding then the alternative behavior creates a better relationship between you and your dog.
👉🏼 Because the settling behavior is taught on a target, this means you can take the target anywhere you go and ask for the same behavior on that target.

Thank you @justferningaround 🙏💕

👉🏼 Why should one dog “place” while another “works”?

🐕 Minimize distractions
🐕 Prevent over-excitement/competition
🐕 Ensure the active dog gets focused attention
🐕 Build solid “place” or “stationing” skills for the waiting dog,
🐕 Creates a calmer training environment and
🐕 Stronger individual bonds
🐕 Dogs often learn better one-on-one
🐕 Helps prevents the waiting dog from developing separation anxiety or interfering
🐕 Allowing the primary dog to focus without canine competition

➡️ The dog in “place” is actually in a higher degree of training than the “working” dog
➡️ Both positions are very important skill sets
➡️ Do you see the benefits?
