the art of slowing down, again.

the in-feed post hiatus is breaking with a recap of the first part of this year. after blowing up my bad left knee for the umpteenth time - a gnarly flipped bucket handle tear on top of the degenerative problems - i had to pull the trigger on yet another surgery at the end of february.

i’m seasoned with injury at this point - 5 left knee surgeries, 3 other surgeries, rehabbed other torn/messed up body parts without surgery - but i’d be lying if i said i’m not sick of it. it is exhausting and frustrating to have joints that seem to not like staying put together, and especially aggravating to have a knee that is constantly falling apart. ESPECIALLY when what i enjoy most is constantly being active and pushing myself to the limit.

now 30 (insert mild to moderate time-is-running-out panic), i took this one slow and methodical (still am). i’m trying my best to not have expectations on how “good” my knee will feel. yes, it still hurts everyday, but it’s back to baseline. at this point, if it isn’t debilitating or locking up on me, that is the very best i can ask for with the state that it’s in. cheers to having high pain tolerance!

i’ve been in the gym with weights and doing PT more than i have been in years trying to prolong the knee replacement looming on the horizon. i’ve been meditating again. pre- and post- surgery, bekah and i went on camping trips with *gasp* no objectives. i’ve been reading and listening to more books that i have in several years. i’ve gotten back on my bike again, and so far, things are going alright.

sometimes i think about what things would look like if i hadn’t blown up my knee in 2018 and ended up with chronic issues and pain, but if i do that, i start getting too sad. it’s all about making the best out of the cards you’re dealt. i can still do a lot! (even if it hurts most of the time).

i’m grateful for this time where i’ve been able to slow down and start over fresh in a lot of ways, but i’m excited to start moving more and get back to myself in the outdoors, even if it means having to be a bit slower and more intentional with how i push myself.

enjoy these moments from the slower times 🫶🏼
