We just had our fourth Write Out Loud at @crazystorybooks and it was full of good spirits! 👻🎃

After a brief check-in where we shared our favorite scary stories, we read “One Need Not be a Chamber—to be Haunted” by Emily Dickinson and discussed what the poem brought up for us.

Then we wrote to the prompt, “I am always haunted …” ✍️ We love how differently each person approached the prompt—some haunted by anxiety or indecision while others had less metaphorical haunts.

We are very grateful to @crazystorybooks for continuing to offer their inspirational space and to all who came out and joined our writing community. We can’t wait to be back again in November! ✍️

Last night our @asbury_book_cooperative Write Out Loud theme was RESPONSIBILITY. ✍️

For check in, we shared the adult responsibilities that we dread the most. There were lots of discussions around relationships, future expectations, bills, parenting, and the responsibility to make art.

We went on to break the word “responsibility” up into its parts—response and ability—and decided that rather than associate responsibility with completion of tasks, we would try instead to treat it as the ability to respond. ✨

During the writing session, we chose from a series of four different tasks that needed to be completed. Each task was met with a spooky themed obstacle 👻 that would test our character’s ability to respond.

Join us for our next Write Out Loud at @asbury_book_cooperative on November 10. Or join us TONIGHT at @crazystorybooks!

Yesterday at Write Out Loud at @asbury_book_cooperative, we worked through writer’s block with a meditation. ✨

During check in, writers shared personal experiences with writers block and tips and tricks we all use to overcome it. Then we did a guided meditation where we visualized our most effective writing place(s) and called on our writing to meet us there as a physical being.

We worked with prompts that helped us to have conversations with our writing and ask what it needs from us to be more effective writers.

While sharing, we spoke about what our writing told us and we all walked away with a new ritual to use in the future that will help us get unstuck. ✍️

Join us for our next Write Out Loud at @crazystorybooks on September 23 and at @asbury_book_cooperative on October 13.

About Write Out Loud at @asbury_book_cooperative last night … ✍️

We worked with metaphor and spoke about how there can be an untold story hidden inside of one that may be already familiar to us. Writers picked from six common metaphors and answered thought provoking questions to come up with origin stories for their chosen metaphors.

Many of us chose the same metaphor and during discussion it was revealed that all of our stories had something in common. It seemed that the collective consciousness was asking us to define purpose, as the conversation kept circling back to that. ✨

Our next Asbury Park Write Out Loud is on Tuesday, September 8. 🔗 Join us by registering at pwnwriters.org!

Another Write Out Loud in the books—literally! 📚

On Tuesday, we spent the night among the bookshelves of @asbury_book_cooperative drawing inspiration from authors across genres. We chose several authors to create one pagers for that included blurbs about them, their pictures, and excerpts from pieces of their work. We put these in envelopes, wrote clues about their careers on the front of them, and gave writers the opportunity to go on a blind date with the author that resonated with them most.

As always, imaginations ran free and our group (FULL of new members, might we add!) made magic together. ✨

Our next Asbury Park Write Out Loud is on Tuesday, August 11. Join us by registering at pwnwriters.org!

Ice Cream Writing Workshop 🍨🍦📝📒🙌🏽💜💫

We had an absolute blast hosting an Ice Cream Writing Workshop as part of the @teenartsnj Youth Arts Initiative at @parlorgallery in Asbury Park on Friday!

More than 50 students and their families showed up for our pop-up writing workshop, which included a complimentary cup of three different flavors and textures of vegan ice cream from @cookmancreamery—a perfect way to stay cool on a hot summer day.

Participants were all given journals, pens, stickers, prompts, temporary tattoos, as well as a creative, supportive space and were encouraged to seek inspiration from the sights, sounds, smells, feels and the overall sensory experience of “consuming” the ice cream, visual art, and prompts alike.

We were so delighted to see a beautiful cross-section of local students from some of the schools and other community partner organizations we’ve worked with over the years, as well as meet some new faces, including some folks who drove over an hour to join us. Incredible!

It was truly amazing to see and hear some of the words and pictures created by the participants. Kudos to all who carved out the time to create. Bonus points to the brave souls who shared what they wrote.

Huge thanks to everyone who participated and supported this workshop! It was an honor and pleasure for us to have the opportunity to facilitate this fun and flavorful workshop on Friday. We are grateful! 💜

We came together last night for a special Pride month edition of Write Out Loud. 🏳️‍🌈

We let our inner child run free as we interacted with the physical space of @asbury_book_cooperative, picked out books from unfamiliar authors with covers that spoke to our playful selves, and pulled inspiration from them to write in the voice of the young spirits inside us. 📚

We are increasingly grateful as new members continue to join us and share their writing with the PWN community!

If you would like to join us, our next meeting will be on July 14th at 7 p.m. 🔗 Register today at pwnwriters.org.
