Many hours during my uni years were tied to this monument - Terry Stringer’s 1981 Mountain Fountain sculpture which was placed in Aotea Square. He never could have predicted his cubist/brutalist Bronze and concrete artwork would become a centrepiece of skateboarding culture for Auckland city for decades to come. This thing brought so many of us joy (and frustration) and entertainment.

Beyond the fountain was an entire culture of individuals and crews who would come together on the regular.

Every skater had their own style, and a different approach this beast, which offered up a myriad of lines, and possibilities with its many facets and faces and edges. The big banks at the front were a testing ground for your flip tricks and often there would just be groups of crew chilling on the benches watching each other try something over and over, eventually getting a roar of applause and decks slapped on the ground when you finally landed something cleanly.

Quite a few boards went in the drink over the years too which got rewarded by sympathetic laughs and beers.

Paying homage to this “obstacle” from my younger years lately and exploring more about its creator has made me really appreciate Terry’s early career and contributions to the Arts. @artis_gallery has a show opening tonight with some of his work that will be worth a look for anyone curious to see more.
