More than just a Wreath-Laying Ceremony...it was a Homecoming to a Campus that MATURED us into Greatness!!

When the first classes stepped into that building, they became the first wave of Alumni to be housed in a campus specifically designed for High-School Students. Not a hand-me-down, not a temporary site......A REAL HIGH-SCHOOL HOME!! We GREW UP in that Aerie via Selective Admissions and Teachers who didn't play about our Success (even when we acted like we didn't want to be successful). Heck, some of our Teachers were Alumni from the campuses of South Rampart, Camp, and St. Ann Streets. They succeeded in buildings unfit or not optimized for High-School Students.

By comparison, Kerlerec was a CASTLE -- modern amenities, green space, and located in a Historically Black Neighborhood!! Yeah, we were dragged because our Aerie was built different--but we were built different, so it was cool. It was something our Ancestors DREAMED of having -- and we honored those dreams by being the BEST and the BRIGHTEST.

The Bricks featured in these photos come from our 1331 Aerie. They've weathered storms, survived demolition, and received a final opportunity to come home after 43 Years of Service to the Roneagle Legacy. They will be donated to the Archives at the Roneagle Way campus, joining a Brick from the South Rampart Street campus that survived 1965's Hurricane Betsy. I'm proud to share them with our Roneagle Family... ...I just wish they could TALK and give me some GOOD 4-1-1 about being a part of our Legacy (and maybe some spicy narratives, LOL).

Legacies are carried in more ways than just Vocals and Documents. Sometimes they're embedded in the Physical Places we call Home.

What school you went too?

So After Katrina hit we were spread across everywhere right? 😣 Dallas, Atlanta, Minnesota, Cleveland smh everywhere! So that one question is so layered, it gives us so much information so quickly. Ya know

It’s like an instant like Social GPS map typa thing.

Within literally seconds, I can determine if I knew someone who went to that school like siblings, cousins, mutual friends and also tells me where you probably grew up Uptown, Downtown, The East, Westbank, etc

So look:

Locator = What school you went too?
Network = Oh my brother went there!
Verify = You know Wayne that was in the band?
The Connection = That’s my dawg!

BOOM….

Relationship established = Exchange numbers

All in 60 seconds! Yall New Orleans really is a small big city 😆

And sometime we have way more Pride for our High School than College? Because:

It’s where we grew up. It’s where we were raised. It’s sometimes a school your aunt, cousin, daddy went there too (Daddy Wayne, Class of 82).

School was stable. School was fun. School was a place for you to “belong” especially if you were a cheerleader, in the band, played ball, whatever.

Shoutout to Thee @mcdonogh35 - The First Black Public School in Louisiana & New Orleans, 109 years old! This was my first year attending the All Class Picnic and I can’t wait to hug on yall next year!
