Throughout the month, we're lifting up just some of the Black American moral leaders whose faith calls them to fight for climate and environmental justice. One such leader is Juwaria Jama, a high school student and community organizer living in Minneapolis. The daughter of Somali immigrants, Juwaria grew up in a predominantly Black community with high rates of asthma due to constant pollution from factories and highways, a common issue for Black communities in the U.S. and a prime example of environmental injustice. As the state lead of Minnesota Youth for Climate Justice, Juwaria has been working hard alongside her fellow youth organizers to push Minnesota to divest from fossil fuels and end the Line 3 oil pipeline. She says her Muslim faith has taught her to take care of the earth and everyone living in it. “Climate Justice is emphasized in Islam and these teachings have helped me work on climate advocacy through an intersectionality lens,” Juwaria says. #BlackHistoryMonth #Faiths4Climate . . .
