We especially appreciate the importance of this approach: meeting women where they already are for mammography and identifying those who may also be eligible for lung cancer screening.

Lung cancer has been the leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States for decades, and it deserves the same urgency, visibility, and commitment to early detection.

A huge thank you to RUSH for putting together such an important event, for including @thewhiteribbonproject , and for helping us share authentic TheWRP white ribbons, made with care in the founders’ Colorado garage workshop! ✨

Lung cancer is changing. And there is HOPE. 🤍

With Pope Leo XIV sharing his lung cancer story, the world is paying attention to a disease that has been misunderstood, stigmatized, and kept in the shadows for far too long.

We are deeply grateful to Pope Leo for continuing to share his personal experience and for shining the brightest light ever on lung cancer. For a disease that has lived in the shadows for so long, this visibility means more than words can express. We are forever grateful.

We also appreciate this important article in @nytimes highlighting just how far lung cancer research and treatment have come.

Advances in targeted therapies, immunotherapy, molecular testing, and early detection are changing outcomes and giving more people the opportunity to live longer, fuller lives, even with advanced-stage disease.

But there is still so much work to do.

Lung cancer can affect anyone. No one deserves lung cancer. And every person diagnosed deserves hope, compassion, access to quality care, and continued investment in research, regardless of their stage or smoking history.

The White Ribbon Project exists because we believe that no one affected by lung cancer should ever feel alone. Behind every diagnosis is a person, a family, and a community. We know firsthand the power of connection, the importance of being seen and heard, and the hope that comes from knowing others are walking alongside you.

We wish Pope Leo continued strength and healing, and we stand alongside everyone affected by lung cancer, wherever they are in their experience.

The White Ribbon Project community around the world is holding Pope Leo XIV close following the news of his lung cancer diagnosis.

We are saddened that anyone must hear the words “you have lung cancer,” and we wish Pope Leo a smooth and speedy recovery following his surgery.

At the same time, we are grateful that his cancer was discovered early and well localized. His diagnosis brings lung cancer into a global conversation at a level rarely seen and helps highlight the importance of awareness, early detection, research and access to the best possible care.

Lung cancer remains the world’s leading cause of cancer death, yet there is so much more hope today than many people realize.

Progress in screening, diagnostics, surgery, targeted therapies, immunotherapy and research is changing what is possible for people at every stage of this disease.

Pope Leo’s experience is also a powerful reminder that early detection matters. For people who are eligible, lung cancer screening can find cancer earlier, when there may be more treatment options and a greater chance for cure. For those who are not eligible and have concerns we encourage a conversation with your health care team.

We are grateful to Pope Leo and the Vatican for speaking openly about his diagnosis and, in doing so, helping the world see lung cancer and hear the people affected by it.

Congratulations to the UCLA American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative Chapter for pushing through your student-led Senate Bill 1124, which requires tobacco retailers to display signs with information about lung cancer screening! A special shout-out to NCCACS member Dr. Jeffrey Velotta for being an incredible advisor and pushing these students to make changes here in California for a better future for all.

THIS is why research matters! And THIS is why we must keep pushing for innovation in lung cancer care!

We are thrilled to see @wilxtv highlighting the incredible work being done at @henryfordhealth using AI-assisted adaptive radiation therapy and sharing the story of Judy, a mother, grandmother, and woman living with advanced lung cancer.

Judy received her stage I lung cancer diagnosis after her first lung cancer screening and while caring for her husband in his final days with stage IV colon cancer.

Six months after surgery, her cancer returned. Today, she is benefiting from an innovative approach to radiation treatment that uses AI to help her medical team adapt her treatment plan to changes in her body each day.

This technology allows physicians to target tumors more precisely while working to protect surrounding healthy organs. Judy’s radiation oncologist reports that her treated tumor is responding well!

THIS is scientific progress making a difference in a real person’s life.

For Judy, it’s about more than treatment. It’s about enjoying time with her growing family, making beautiful memories, and continuing those precious Wednesday visits with her granddaughter, who calls her Gigi.

We are so grateful to Judy for sharing her story, WILX for bringing attention to this important advancement, and the researchers and healthcare professionals at Henry Ford Health who continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Innovations like this give our community HOPE! We must keep supporting research and advocating for equitable access so more people can benefit from advances in cancer care.

We are thrilled to announce the 2026 Pre-Health Conference Keynote Speaker, Dr. Jeffrey B. Velotta, MD, FACS!

Dr. Velotta is a Thoracic Surgeon at Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center and holds many faculty positions at UCSF and Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. He is currently the leading voice in innovative lung cancer surgery aiming to maximise long-term outcomes and patient quality of life.

SB 1124 is a bill sitting on @cagovernor Newsom's desk! We are looking to get information up about lung cancer screening at places where tobacco products are sold!

If you are:
-between 50-80 years old
-have smoked a pack of cigarettes per day for 20 years or more
-are a current smoker or have quit in the last 15 years

You're eligible for lung cancer screening!

We are getting the word out as we have until 9/30/2026 for Governor Newsom to sign the bill into law!
