*Spells for Forgetting* by Adrienne Young

WOW. I was surprised by how much I loved this book. One night, Emery Blackwood's life changed forever when her best friend was found dead and the love of her life was accused of murdering her. Though it was never solved, August and his mother fled the island because the accusations were too much. Fourteen years later, August returns to bury his mother's ashes on Saoirse Island. The island is not like any other place, but is deeply rooted in magic and always sticks with you when you leave. Upon August's return, Saoirse's dark past comes to the surface and Emery is determined to figure out what truly happened.

I was really hesitant to read this book because it seemed too "fantasy-ish" for me. I don't typically like stories involving magic (excluding Harry Potter), but this didn't really have a ton of magic in it. I was immediately engrossed in the mystery of the murder but also the character depth in everyone in the community. I loved reading all the different perspectives, trying to figure out what had really happened. I also became very attached to the romance between August and Emery, I love a good separated soulmate saga! All this to say, I'm really glad I read outside my comfort zone because I loved this book!

🌵Y’all, how is it already August?! This year has just poofed away💨

🌵I haven’t done a #spellthemonthinbooks stack in a bit so here is August’s. After downsizing my books for our move, this was a bit harder than I anticipated! It worked out though and I even got to use one of the elephant banks my Oma got in Thailand (I think!) as a prop..we have a green one too and they’re so cute!

𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿? Is 1 a.m. considered morning in this scenario? I'm assuming it's part of the night category. I read more at night. Usually.

𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀? Both!

𝗙𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? Why either/or? Just, no. I want both.

𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿? I prefer hardcovers, but I'll happily read either.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀? Again, both! Half the new releases I buy are old releases by the time I read them. 🫣

𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆? Isn't happy an emotion? 🤔 I need emotions in a book, regardless of which kind of emotions they are.

𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿? This is unfair. We can't lump a̲l̲l̲ classics in here. I'm not a fan of forcing classics at people just because they're supposed to be superior literature. But I love some of them. Is that an answer? 🤷🏻‍♀️

𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲? Silence! 🤫

𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴-𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀? Bookmarks, always. Even a scrap of paper. Just do not dog-ear my pages!

Back in the dark ages of my school years, we discussed time in a class. I have no context regarding the subject being taught or the teacher, but I distinctly remember the entire class sitting in silence as the clock ticked away one minute. ⏰
