What’s better than going to a book fair as an adult? When it’s FREE!!? Yesterday was felt like going to a scholastic book fair as a child!

I may have bought myself 3 books and one of them being a children’s book, shout out to @onceuponalittlemind for the inspiration of reading children’s as adults. Never too old for whimsy!

⁉️ Have you been to a book fair or festival? If so which one?

A stick is never just a stick. 🌿

Every September, we spend time learning a very important thing about playing with sticks: Sticks need space.

They are fun. They can become so many things. We can build, imagine, create, move and play with them, but we need to make sure we have enough space between ourselves and our friends so that nobody gets accidentally bonked by a stick.

Two of our favourite books to inspire this kind of imaginative outdoor play are Not a Stick by Antoinette Portis and What to Do with a Stick by Jane Yolen.

Before reading Not a Stick, each learner chooses a stick from the forest. As we read the story, they use their own stick to act out the different possibilities along the way.

And What to Do with a Stick is the perfect book to continue that thinking. We might build, create, move, mark-make, tell stories, invent games or simply let our imaginations take over. The beauty is that the books don’t have to end when we close them. The forest becomes the next page. 🌲

And that is one of the things I love most about outdoor learning in Kindergarten; giving children the time, space and freedom to take a simple natural material and turn it into anything they can imagine.

What are some of your favourite read aloud for outdoor learning?
