A seat at the table should never be viewed as a privilege reserved for a select few. It should be the standard for those willing to put in the work, serve their communities, and help create opportunities for others.

I was honored to participate in a recent roundtable at City Hall alongside community leaders, public servants, advocates, and professionals from across New York City. As Black men from different backgrounds and experiences, it was powerful to be part of a conversation centered on listening, learning, collaboration, and finding ways to strengthen our communities.

What stood out to me was a simple reminder: progress rarely happens alone. It happens when leadership intentionally reaches back, opens doors, and creates pathways for those coming behind them.

A special thank you to Javion Howard, Grant Yanney, Hercules Reid, Kary Hudson, Jahmila Edwards, and Jelanie Deshong. Thank you for using your fire to keep lighting the torch for others and for creating spaces where future leaders can be seen, heard, and empowered.

The real measure of success isn’t getting a seat at the table..it’s helping build a bigger table. 🏛️🗽

Growing up, having a seat at the table was just a concept. Today, that concept has become a reality.

This was no ordinary sit-down; it was the continuation of a vision that we belong. A seed was planted long ago, and once again, it has transcended administrations.

In 2022, while serving in the Mayor’s Office, I was encouraged by people like Andrea Shapiro Davis and others to take the baton and continue holding space for Black men at the roundtable known as the COW in City Hall. This effort started long before my time, with leaders like Gregg Bishop and others carrying the torch during their tenure.

I knew I couldn’t do it alone, so I brought my peers, Javion Howard, Grant Yanney, and Kary Hudson, to the table to help carry the baton. Together, we were able to run with it, bringing many Black men to the table with us month after month.

I want to give a special thank you to Jahmila Edwards, who understood the importance of this roundtable and worked with Jelanie Deshong to make it happen. It is now his turn to run his mile.

Thank you to Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his administration for opening the doors and being part of this legacy. Sitting down and having real, vulnerable conversations as men was powerful. It was great learning about your journey and story, while also hearing your vision for supporting our communities.

We look forward to working together to make a difference.

The Foundation was laid….. Now the building continues. When we first started this, we imagined it continuing to grow beyond us and I’m grateful to see the vision continues.

Thank you to @nycmayor for taking time to speak with us and it was a powerful time of unity & fellowship 🙏🏾
