Khalida Jawadi’s memoir, I Didn’t Break, is an honest, raw, searingly direct and many a times painful read - one that doesn’t soften any blows. It is also a very brave and vulnerable memoir, one that has taken immense courage to write and share.

I got to know about Khalida first when @shobhan.author.lifecoach messaged me about her memoir a few months back. I was quite amazed to connect with an Afghan woman who had spent quite a few of her teen years in Delhi, in fact very close to where I live.

I reached out to Khalida after finishing her memoir last week, to let her know how deeply her life story impacted me, and how I felt deep anger towards those who had harmed her - to know that today she lives a safe, healthy and purposeful life, with her own business, as the mum of the sweetest little boy, and with love in her life - it made it a bit easier to move on from all the pain and hardships she has had to endure.

“Afghan-born, Indian-raised, Australian-made”, Khalida’s memoir is one of “survival, healing and hope.”
An Afghan refugee, her family moved from the “chaos of war”, to New Delhi, and finally to Australia.

This memoir is her story, and one of an Afghan family displaced first by war, and then by circumstances outside their control.
Trigger warning - Khalida shares very honestly about the childhood abuse and assaults she endured. She is also a cancer survivor.

It was heartbreaking to read about how much she has endured at her young age, and it was equally inspiring to see how fiercely determined she has been to literally not break and not only survive but thrive in life.

Please do pick up this memoir - it is painful to read about all that Khalida’s been through , but you’ll be in awe of this woman who fought against all odds to be who she is today.

$Winter recap! Fell through a roof, fractured a couple of bones, tried to cover it up with a turtleneck, didn’t miss a gig, released some tunes, did some shows, parented, bought new gear, launched a new business venture, made some music & got some quality fam time in.
