Charak Puja is a traditional Hindu folk festival mainly celebrated in West Bengal, Assam, and Bangladesh during the last days of the Bengali year (mid-April), just before Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year). 🔱 Religious Significance Charak Puja is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped as the destroyer and transformer. It is a part of the larger Gajan Festival. Devotees (called Sannyasis or Bhaktas) perform rituals to seek blessings for: Good health Prosperity Protection from evil 🔥 Main Rituals & Practices Charak Tree Ritual: A tall pole (Charak tree) is erected; devotees swing from it using hooks tied to their backs (a symbolic act of devotion and sacrifice). Fire Rituals (Agni Nritya): Walking on fire or dancing with flames to show faith and endurance. Body Piercing: Devotees pierce their skin with sharp objects as an act of penance. Fasting & Discipline: Many observe strict fasting and spiritual practices for days. 🕉️ Cultural Essence It reflects deep rural traditions and faith, especially among farming communities. The festival marks the end of the agricultural cycle and hopes for a better harvest. Accompanied by: Folk songs Drums (dhak) Local fairs (melas) 📜 Historical Background Charak Puja has roots in ancient Shaivism (Shiva worship). It evolved as a folk ritual blending tribal and Hindu traditions. During British rule, some extreme rituals (like hook swinging) were restricted, but symbolic forms still continue. 🌼 Essence in One Line Charak Puja is a powerful expression of devotion, sacrifice, and rural cultural identity centered around Lord Shiva. #chorokpuja🔱🙏📿💙🕉️ #bengali #bengalinewyear #bengalitradition #bengalifestival
