Melody Place is expanding its digital team with the addition of Kacey Flory as Head of Digital Marketing and Kayla Smith as Digital Marketing Coordinator.

Flory brings nearly 10 years of industry experience to the role, including more than seven years at Crowd Surf, where she worked her way from Digital Marketing Assistant to Director of Marketing & Management. During her time there, she worked on digital campaigns for artists and clients across pop, country and other genres, including Camila Cabello, New Kids on the Block, Joshua Henry, Atsuko Okatsuka and Jim Gaffigan.

Smith began building her career in music four years ago by shadowing industry professionals and volunteering at shows, where she gained experience in touring merchandise. She spent three years working as an elementary school teacher while continuing to pursue opportunities in music, working shows during nights, weekends and summers. During that time, she also earned a master’s degree in marketing and analytics. This summer, Smith worked as a digital intern at The Core Entertainment before joining Melody Place.

If you didn’t know, I’ve been the owner of a female owned and operated business with my friend Cassie Petrey for almost 18 years now. As hard as that has been on its own, it’s worth noting that our business, the music industry, is very male dominated.
I believe I have several core purposes in my life. First and foremost is being an Aunt to an incredible nephew. Second is empowering women in this industry. It has been the pleasure of a lifetime doing so but it has not come easy.
When we wanted to start Crowd Surf, we set up a meeting at Bank of America to get a business loan. What I didn’t realize at the time is that in 2007 when we set up this meeting that women had only been able to independently acquire business loans for 18 years in this country. We were essentially laughed out of the bank after pitching our social media business idea. We never got a business loan. We opened credit cards and juggled other jobs while we tried to make this work.
Now, 18 years later, our incredible female bankers at Pinnacle take our calls, lift us up and help us advance our business.
In 18 years we have nearly folded more times than I can count from financial hardship, but somehow, no matter what happened, we prevailed. We’ve personally skipped so many pay periods, I’ve had my car repossessed and sat in a bankruptcy office at age 28.
We’ve been fired, pinned against other women, spoken down to, mislabeled, underpaid and underestimated. Still, we are women and we prevailed.
We have hired hundreds of strong, talented, determined women including our mothers and will continue to do so as we change the face of the music industry.
In short…happy first day of International Women’s Month. Thank a woman today who has made your life better.
