Oh my! What a fun and delicious night last night at the @guildoffinefood #GreatTasteAwards was. I ate a lot. I smiled a lot. I drank a lot. I clapped a lot. I clearly took a lot of videos. I even helped an over-served fellow guest find his way to the station. You know: a typical Tuesday in September. In all honesty, though, my takeaway from yesterday was more than increased esteem for both the products and producers, as well as the importance of the awards themselves— it was a humble appreciation for being part of a community and living in a country that celebrates not only the local but also champions the international. As @mallikabasu_ put it so well, “great taste is global,” and that maxim was evident in the diversity of the crowd, products and countries represented. The UK may have Brexited, but, no matter what some say or want, we are NOT an island whatsoever when it comes to our food, our appetites and our people. Finalists last night hailed from Taiwan, Thailand and Kyrgyzstan. Finnish cured trout took home an award, as did Kampot pepper from Cambodia. An Italian honey won the evening’s people’s choice award. Scotland. Greece. Italy. Spain. Wales. The expanse of our collective (great) taste was and is indeed global. And it is glorious. And it was glorious and touching (to me, at least) that so much of the evening took place in actual translation. That was my takeaway. And also the families. So many families, love, pride and generations of craft. Incredible. Thank you @guildoffinefood for inviting me to take part in the awards and the judging process. What a privilege! And thank you for celebrating incredible producers, products, flavors and people. Fantastic, of course, to see @mallikabasu_ @eleanorfordfood @kentcooking @amy__poon @marie_mitchell_ @chetnamakan @samuelwgoldsmith @kkrader simiskitchen too! Now, time to do some Christmas shopping! Seriously. I made a list. And you should too.

A simple supper, which is the best kind! Smoked salmon (the incomparable @goldsteinsalmon from the lovely @rex.goldsmith) with @wasabigrowersuk Sanbaizu vinegar, pepper (the best, namely black Kampot from @kadodepepperuk), sliced radishes and dill; new potatoes with @mellowyellowkitchen cold-pressed rapeseed oil and samphire; plus green salad with capers, parsley and tarragon. My name-checking/tagging not done to sell it or because I have anything to gain from doing so – thought maybe should make that clear since these days so many people seem to see the worst in everything, depressingly – but because 1) credit where credit’s due, and 2) I love to share the joy!

✨ celebrASIA Haul ✨ We’re sill not over how amazing celebrASIA at @batterseapwrstn was this year! From the vibrant performances to the food stalls, it was such a blast celebrating South East Asian culture with everyone! We obviously couldn’t leave empty-handed, so here’s a peek at what came home with us from the amazing Artisan Market that was inside the Turbine Halls 🛍️👇 📚A few stunning books to feed our minds (and stomachs!) 💌 Handmade soap & candles that smell divine 🎨 Some artwork & accessories that we can’t stop admiring 🌶️ Sauces & spices to level up our kitchen game 🍸 A bottle of craft gin that’s almost too pretty to open Still smiling thinking about the record-breaking weekend we had! Huge love to all the traders sharing their culture and creativity. We can’t wait for next year’s celebrASIA 💛🧡❤️ #celebrASIA #celebrasia2025 #batterseapowerstation #southeastasia #haulpics #festivalhaul #southeastasianculture #foodiefinds #marketfinds

A pretty good Saturday lunch: hot off the press @guildoffinefood Great Taste Supreme Champion 2025 hot smoked mackerel from @enkilnhouse 👏 with sourdough from @middlelanemarket, the entire year’s harvest of delicious white beetroot from our little patio garden (thanks @tamsincairns for the Easter plants!), a bit of horseradish and spinach, topped off with another award winner favourite (and 2022 Supreme Champ producer!) from @kadodepepperuk

Chuffed to be joining this year’s celebrASIA Festival @batterseapwrstn 5-7 Sep ❤️‍🔥🇸🇬 I’ll be at the Artisan Market with @rempapaspiceco, handing out curry shots and selling our curry pastes, sambals and coconut. Alongside many brilliant maker friends - just look at that lineup! And on the Saturday, I’ll be at @batterseabookshop signing copies of Agak Agak and answering any questions you may have about Singaporean cooking. Again, look at that fab lineup of authors! Also happening over that weekend: The best of London’s street food stalls, bars serving Singha Beer (or Singaporean kopi/ Thai milk tea/ Malaysian teh tarik if you rather), and long-table dining experiences hosted by the hottest chefs in town. Plus everything from batik masterclasses to lantern making workshops for the kids. See you there? x #celebrasia @batterseapwrstn @welovefestuk

For all that I wrote about this for the @ft_weekend Christmas issue last year, it does happen to be perfect no-sweat, hot-weather food, too. It’s an unconventional way of eating smoked salmon, but an exquisite one. For it, though, you do really need a wonderfully gentle and mild cure, and for me that means the lusciously sashimi-like @goldsteinsalmon that I get from lovely @rex.goldsmith; it has spoilt me for all other smoked salmon forever! Then I just grind over pepper, and for preference (always) @kadodepepperuk black Kampot pepper, splash with my beloved @wasabigrowersuk Sanbaizu vinegar, and top with thin-as-you-can radish slices and a feathery sprinkle of dill. Since I’ve name-checked all the ingredients I love here, it seems only fair to say how much pleasure I’m getting from my @hmhome tablecloth this summer. It’s probably been in far too many photos here, since I’ve been eating in my gorgeously shady garden a lot, understandably enough. By the way, despite all the brand-tagging, this is not an ad or a paid-for endorsement, but simply an expression of my enthusiasm.

I’m afraid I haven’t been keeping up with my list of Christmas presents for the food-focussed, but I’m here now to tell you about one of my most beloved ingredients: black Kampot pepper, and more specifically @kadodepepperuk black Kampot pepper. I couldn’t happily cook or eat without it. It’s deeply aromatic, and with a warm spiciness that enriches anything you add it to. You can get it direct from @kadodepepperuk, though it’s also on @amazonuk (yes, I know) and would be the perfect stocking filler or, indeed, present to yourself! And if you want to bump it up a bit, present-wise, you could always get a small pepper mill to go with… Btw, my Christmas present suggestions – there are more to come over the following days – are all UK-based, as I am. And they’re not endorsements or plugs, just genuine enthusiasms of mine #christmas #christmaspresent #christmaspresents #christmaspresentideas #stockingfillers #instapost #kampotpepper
