I had the BEST time attending VIFF as a DSO Delegate. It was such a wonderful experience getting to connect with amazing like minded creatives! I also had the opportunity to attend the screenings of The Lion Does Not Concern Himself and participate in my first ever Q&A at a festival. None of this would have been possible without the @disabilityscreen so thank you!

This year has been particularly difficult. A mixed episode completely took over my life from mid October 2025 to the beginning of August 2026. You read that right….✨10 months✨. I needed some good news and the whole experience affirmed that even though I have a screw..or two..loose I do belong in the industry and I can be a leader despite it being hard and difficult at times.

Also my back phone camera doesn’t work so the only photo I took from the trip is in the last slide when I briefly stopped into a cat cafe in between screenings. But believe me Vancouver is beautiful and we should all move there.

We have been cooking up this collaboration in the background for a few weeks and I am glad that I can finally share it. Thank you to @kagangoh for providing me with the opportunity to screen two of our short films at this event. A raw, unflinching family drama about a young Chinese-Canadian poet whose bipolar diagnosis reshapes everything: his relationships, his dreams, and his sense of self in a world not built for people like him.

Written, produced, and directed by Vancouver-based filmmaker and mental health advocate Kagan Goh, who peers in the spoken-word community affectionately call "the bipolar poet laureate."

Common Law is as personal as filmmaking gets.

Kagan has lived this story. And he put it on screen so others wouldn't feel so alone in theirs.

Tomorrow (Sunday, July 26), for the first time in 20-years, Ying Wang's debut feature SISTERS 姐妹 will be shown on the big screen at the Cinematheque. The sisters -- Ying and Jie -- will come together for a conversation after the screening.

In her 2025 director's note for the film, Ying writes:

"Two decades have passed since we completed SISTERS. Back then, it was the first film on this topic made by ethnic Chinese filmmakers. Watching it now, I’m proud of Jie’s courage and honesty.

The film is raw, provocative, and bold. It seeks to look beyond the visible suffering, attempting to probe the deeper causes of mental problems: the invisible forces of suppression of modern society, the loneliness and vulnerability of the human soul, and the restless craving for acceptance and belonging. With the little money we could put together and zero filmmaking experience at the time, I’m proud of what we achieved.

Today, the film feels more relevant now than ever. Eating disorders are no longer a Western phenomenon. Over the years, we’ve received increasing inquiries about the film. This is why we plan to re-release it, hoping it can reach and connect with those who suffer in silence, who struggle with loneliness, and who long for a sense of companionship."

SISTERS 姐妹
Director: Ying Wang | 2005 | 86 min | Drama

In a sparsely furnished apartment in an unnamed city, two sisters live together, bound by love and fragile dependency. As the younger battles a severe eating disorder, the older struggles to keep herself—and her sister—afloat. But the closer she gets, the more the line between savior and self-destruction begins to blur.

Sisters was born from the true experiences of Ying Wang and her younger sister Jie, who developed a severe eating disorder after immigrating to North America. In 2002, the sisters began co-writing the screenplay. With the help of friends and their modest savings, they completed the film between 2004 and 2005. Jie portrayed Ping, a fictionalized version of herself. Acting became a liberating act—her first real chance to speak her truth. The film marked the beginning of her slow but steady recovery.
