Nā'ū 40 x 30 Oil on linen

A view I always admire driving back from Hilo on Saddle. Backlit clouds, scattered light across the pu’u, and Maunakea in the background. Nā'ū is a place name on Maunakea that also refers to a pale yellow color and it reminded me of the dry pili grass across the high country.

This place holds some of my strongest childhood memories and is also one of the most beloved places on Hawai’i Island. Today this landscape is at the center of major change and this painting has taken on a new meaning for me. It seems like someday in our lifetime it will be a window into the past. I want to continue to paint this ahupua’a how I remember. More to come:) Thank you 🤍
