The 1997 #oscarnominated movie Good Will Hunting starring the late #robinwilliams & a young #mattdamon, is one of my favorites. The most iconic line was delivered by Damon’s title character goes something like ‘I got her number. How do you like them apples?’ It recently dawned upon me that it’s a perfect tl;dr summary of the father of #japanesewhisky, Masataka Taketsuru’s life.
-
After enrolling at the University of Glasgow to study organic chemistry he befriended a medical student, Ella Cowan. The well respected Cowan family had fallen on hard times, younger sister Jessie Roberta ‘Rita’ Cowan lost her fiancé in WW1 & the passing of Dr Samuel Cowan left the family in debt. Ella invited Taketsuru to teach her brother Campbell, the art of Judo & ultimately to help with finances, took him on as a lodger. In the evenings, Rita would play the piano & Taketsuru would often join with a #Japanese hand drum. Despite the language barrier, love blossomed over music & literature. After marrying, Taketsuru wanted to stay in Scotland, but Rita knew his dream was to make Scotch whisky in Japan & urged him to move home. Nearing the end of his tumultuous time at #kotobukiya (later Suntory), Masataka was so frustrated he was resigned to the fact his future was in academia. Again, Rita intervened introducing him to investors she met in #osaka while teaching piano. Out of respect for Shinjiro Torii & knowing he needed time, In 1934, Taketsuru opened Dai Nihon Kaju Kabushiki Kaisha (Japanese: 大日本果樹株式会社 or The Great Japanese Juice Co.) on an #apple orchard in #yoichi #hokkaido. Initially focused on apple products, by 1940, the first whisky was released named #Nikka (by shortening the company name [(Ni)hon-(Ka)ju]. In 1952 the company was renamed the Nikka Whisky Co.
.
In 2020, in honor of the 100th Anniversary of Rita and Masataka’s marriage, Nikka released a limited edition set of Yoichi & #Miyagikyo malts finished in Apple Brandy Casks. The irony is Rita is more famous in Japan than Scotland. In Yoichi, Rita Road is named for her & in 2014, their story was retold in a widely viewed #NHK morning drama entitled Massan (Japanese: マッサン) – Rita’s nickname for Masataka. #kanpai 🥃
