Life is precious. And all life is interconnected.

Today, I’m holding my community on Gadigal land close, while turning to my other home, the one my mother calls Ilankai (‘Sri lanka’). It’s a name without borders, without violent sentiment or nationalist ideals. A word that simply means home.

In the wake of Cyclone Ditwah, Ilankai is still hurting. Entire communities continue to fight for survival, dignity, and care, away from headlines.

That’s why, together with twenty-five extraordinary artists and makers, we’ve launched the Art for Ilankai Raffle, a direct fundraiser for on-the-ground relief.

Every ticket you buy funds women-led, frontline responses. Your support flows directly to The Malayaha Tamil community in the central province, at-risk women and children on the east coast and families with disabilities in the North.

We’re working in trusted partnership with @art_kayamai , @sambolfoundation, and @anushani.a to ensure aid reaches the hands that need it the most.

Our goal is $5000. It’s a number that turns into medicine, essential living items, dry rations, shelter, dignity.

And in return you could hold a piece of this collective care in your hands.

Today we honour and acknowledge our kin whose lives have been changed forever during the devastating events of Black July. Decades have passed but the memory remains seared into our collective consciousness, as we continue to search for spaces to mourn, grieve, and make sense of this loss.

As queer and trans Tamil people are often left behind in conversations of reflection and remembrance, artists from across the world featured in the ஊர் exhibition use their practice to speak on displacement and bring to light the queer stories of immeasurable grief and strengthened resilience that continues to live within us today.

QTC's ஊர் exhibition is currently up at the Scarborough Museum until January 31st 2024.

$Experience ஊர் (Oor), showcasing excellence in Queer Tamil visual art! The Queer Tamil Collective’s ஊர் (Oor) Exhibition, hosted at Scarborough Museum, explores the question of belonging when faced with the fractures of displacement through war, colonialism, caste violence and queerphobia through sculptures, textiles, paintings, portraits and videos. The exhibition is on view at Scarborough Museum during opening hours beginning Sunday, July 9 until January, 31, 2024. @queertamilcollective @cityofto @culture_to #TOHistory #CityOfTO #Pride Image description: A pencil drawing of a rooster in heels with a long braid wrapped around its neck on a white background.
