So HONOURED to music direct and play keys for @kaiit_isshe’s Like A Version for @triple_j! Kaiit gave me the brief to recreate @oliviadeano’s song A Couple Minutes in a hiphop meets 1920s jazz style and this is what we came up with!! It means so much to cover a song by Olivia who we have just finished touring around so called Australia and Aotearoa supporting.

Akey styling by @yuchenism who gives me so much trans euphoria every time 😭💓

I’m so thankful to the music team behind this:

Did my big one - returned back to my practice and healed a lil on the way 💚

Sissy @kaiit_isshe and I have been for the longest time, having convos about getting back to creating and making something; and for the universe to align and decide this was the time, and the project, couldn’t have resulted in a more perfect piece for the perfect person.

I wanted to create a hat that was heavily inspired by a tam crossed with a cabby cap - weaving and structuring the basket to look as as if it flopped and bent at whim, as if it were fabric. I wanted it to mimic the floppiness and shape of a big ass floppy hat (cause me and K luv floppy hats tehe).

A couple of years ago I got to see a basket I had woven at 5-6 years old at the Ian Potter Gallery after not seeing it for like 20 years - and it rekindled my love of weaving and connecting back to creating, I just couldn’t settle on any inspiration. So a big thank you to the sis - I love you, thank you for entrusting me with creating something you can use as a vessel to express yourself.

Heres to Blak women, who protected our cultural practices for me to have this today. To blak women expressing themselves in a world that told us we weren’t even meant to exist. To the kooky, black sheep girls who always gotta “be difficult” and be their own person - shining so hard it gives others permission to shine. And here’s to the passion and drive to create and connect through that creating x
