Fellow photographers, stay away from Walters Camera aka Camera Shop Chop and stay away from Henry Polo Aquije — who has a long history of stealing cameras under the guide of being a camera technician.

@kailaide I’m sorry you had to experience this and I hope justice is served.

LA based photographer Kai George took her late grandmother’s vintage Rolleiflex camera to Walter’s Camera Repairs in Los Angeles for what was supposed to be a simple mirror replacement. The camera dated back to the 1960s, had barely been used and was in beautiful condition after being stored away for decades.

About a week later, Kai returned to pick it up and immediately noticed something was wrong. The camera had scratches, dents, missing pieces and visibly worn parts that weren't there before.

After sharing before-and-after videos, people familiar with vintage cameras began pointing out differences in the lens numbers and components. Some even suggested she had been given an entirely different, less valuable camera.

What makes this even more concerning is that Kai says the repairman mentioned owning a similar camera when she first dropped hers off.

When confronted, the shop offered explanations involving mixed-up parts, unavailable tools and the difficulties of repairing antique cameras. In messages Kai shared, the repairman even stated, "I do not baby cameras."

Older customer reviews have also surfaced accusing the same business of switching camera and camera lenses.

Kai says she has since filed a police report, is looking for an attorney and has started a GoFundMe to cover legal expenses.

This wasn't just an expensive camera. It belonged to her grandmother, who has since passed away. Its sentimental value is something money cannot replace.

Protect your gear and document your serial numbers before you ever leave a camera at a repair shop 📸⚠️

@kailaide trusted a vintage camera repair shop with a priceless 1960s Rolleiflex passed down through her family from her grandmother. She brought it in for routine service, and what came back was an absolute disaster.

Mismatched plates, stripped screws, fresh gouges in the metal, and hardware that does not even match the original camera build. The craziest part is the shop admitting on camera that they forced the screws because they did not have the proper tools. 👎🏽

Gatekeeping in this industry is bad enough, but taking advantage of independent photographers and ruining sentimental film gear is completely unacceptable.

If you are dropping off vintage film cameras or cinema packages for service, follow three non negotiable rules:

1️⃣ Photograph every angle, screw, and cosmetic detail right on the shop counter before handing it over.
2️⃣. Log the exact serial number on your intake paperwork and take a picture of the signed receipt.

3️⃣Require written approval before any internal parts or plates are swapped.
Stand up for your fellow creators and hold these shops accountable 🤝📦
