I love @medillschool #GraduationDay . In the three years that I’ve attended as a faculty member, I’ve felt my heart just about explode with pride, I’ve cried, I’ve clapped so hard my hands hurt, I’ve never smiled more in one morning. And I’ve also never taken more photos. (This year, I got a shot of one of my terrific students waving at me on stage! I ADORE @rach.schlueter 💜) And then I get so overwhelmed with how many photos I’ve taken that I never post them! Not this year. I’m still basking in the purple glow and thinking of all our incredibly smart, talented and courageous students. I already can’t wait to see all the stories they will tell in the world. Bravissimi, all of you! Oh, and I have THE BEST colleagues, too. Special thanks to Alex Kotlowitz & J.A. Adande, who have been such big inspirations to me for decades and are retiring this year. I remember having to read Alex’s masterpiece THERE ARE NO CHILDREN HERE in a sociology class when I was a freshman and it left such a mark on me. Thank you. And, go #MedillMafia ! 💜📰✍️✨💜 #medill #journalism #proudteacher

In Fall 2023, I was teaching my first class at @medillschool — it was my very first university writing class ever, 202, which is the Introduction to #Journalism class all freshmen had to take. I told my students on the first day that I remembered sitting where they were exactly 30 years ago at Medill, and I couldn’t quite believe I was on the other side of the classroom now, but that I’d try to teach them something. The talented and sweet @kaileyzagst was in that class, and boy were she and everyone else patient with me as I learned how to be a teacher that quarter. Fast forward to three years later and she shows up in my Food & Travel Journalism class. She’s graduating a full year early — she is that kind of awesome — and she thought it would be a lovely bookend to her Medill career to have this Prof. be one of her last @ @northwesternu . (Reader, I just about cried.) I can’t tell you how proud I am of this incredible young journalist who will soon be out there changing the world — just like everyone in her class will be. Kailey, I am enormously proud of you and will always be rooting for you. ❤️✨❤️ #medill #journalists #northwestern
