Ever Channeled Grief into Purpose?

From San Diego, CA, Kaiolena Tacazon (’26) spends the summer balancing surf shop shifts with her internship at a sports arena while concentrating in Visual Arts and American Studies. Through it all, she identifies her family as a central pillar of constant support: “I think my family has always really been known as go-getters. Their work ethic continuously inspires me to do more in my life.”

That mentality shapes how Kaiolena sees her career: “It’s really easy as someone in the arts to feel like you can never grow outside of your practice,” she said. But watching her parents and siblings reach for more has taught her not to box herself in. “I don’t have to be set up as just a sports photographer or working in social media forever. I can really just do whatever I want.”

Still, her outlook isn’t only shaped by ambition. Last summer, her life was marked by deep loss when her childhood best friend, Chris, passed away in a motorcycle accident. “That has genuinely changed my life forever,” she said. “I’ll never be the same. Losing someone so young makes you realize that your life is really not all that long. You could die tomorrow.”
That grief reshaped her sense of time and urgency. “If I die tomorrow, what is there to show for my life? Him passing away escalated that thought—that I would rather do all of the things I want to do, take risks, and move forward without hesitation. No one’s time is forever.”

It’s also why she’s unapologetic about studying art, despite raised eyebrows. “People ask, ‘You go to Brown, why do you study art?’ But I like it. Our program is fantastic, and I love what I do. Life is too short not to.”

When asked what accomplishment means to her, Kaiolena doesn’t point to titles or job offers. Instead, she thinks of the people around her. “I just want to make the people in my life proud,” she said. “My siblings, my grandparents, my cousins, Chris’s family, family friends—they’re all big parts of my life.”

For her, true accomplishment is about how her community remembers her: “Not only for being hardworking, but for the community I cultivate around me.”

We can’t wait to see all that Kaiolena creates next! 🎨
