Kaitlyn is back for another book review! She’s still living her best life on her boat in Cali. When I saw Remarkably Bright Creatures was coming out, I knew she would be interested. 😏 Here’s our review!

Synopsis: Tova Sullivan works in the Sowell Bay Aquarium as a night custodian. Despite being well into her 70s, she is a diligent employee who takes great pride in her work. The aquarium is quiet at night, and she likes to make conversation with the sea creatures, especially Marcellus, the octopus. Tova is lonely these days; her son died under mysterious circumstances at a young age, and her husband passed away just a few years ago. She has her group of friends, the Knit-Wits, but she fears that when it’s her time to go there won’t be anyone to look after her. When an out of towner comes looking for the man he believes to be his father, he feels a sense of belonging in Sowell Bay that he hasn’t felt before in his whole life, and he and Tova form an unlikely bond, helping each other heal in unexpected ways.

Our rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5

The hype about this one is real! Tova and Marcellus were our favorites, but it’s the kind of book in which you love and root for all the characters. As someone who works and lives on water in Cali and has worked with sea animals, Kaitlyn felt especially connected to this book and liked the trust that was built between humans and sea animals. We liked the mystery of figuring out how the characters would become connected, and we were satisfied with how it all came together at the end. For fans of A Man Called Ove and The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett! Thanks for reading with me, Kaitlyn! 🐙

Meet Kaitlyn! Kaitlyn is a former college teammate and roommate. She hails from Wyoming originally and now resides in the San Diego area where she is a captain who works for autonomous navy vehicles. Her job allows her to spend her days out in the ocean. When she’s not in the ocean for work, she’s living on top of it in the boat she recently bought. 🛳 Kaitlyn is notorious for never being ready on time (the “I’m-gettin- in-the-shower-now”-but-actually-still-laying-in-bed type) and for napping (our napping schedules were very much in sync in college). Kaitlyn is the kind of friend I can chat with as if no time has passed, and we always revert back to being silly college girls when we’re around each other. Enjoy the throwbacks that give you the full picture of our friendship. 🤪 We decided to read Red Sky Over Hawaii by Sara Ackerman. Here’s our review!

Synopsis: Lana Hitchcock has been estranged from her father for years, but when she finds out he’s dying, she heads to the Big Island to see him. While she’s there, Pearl Harbor is bombed, and the rules on the island become stricter. Lana finds herself in the care of her dad’s neighborhood kids when their parents are taken to camp as prisoners. Hiding in the safe house that belongs to her father, she waits it out with the two kids in the hopes that their parents will be released, free of suspicion.

Our rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5

We both love Hawaii, so the setting of this one was fun for us! While we had no complaints about the writing style or general plot, we wished it had gone a little deeper on something, whether it was the relationship between Lana and her dad, the history of Hawaii, or the relationship that Lana had with a soldier in the story. All of the characters were really likeable, but it was just missing a little something. It was frustrating to see innocent people being persecuted and taken from their homes on the island, and we thought that Sara Ackerman gave us a good depiction of what it was like to live in Hawaii during WWII. Thanks for reading with me, Kaitlyn! 🐬

I told my brother to open his Jeep doors. He looked at me as if I had two heads asking him to keep his car doors opened. Why? He asked. As we watched two male moose play fighting with each other, they got close to us and the cars parked at the Moose cross country trailhead. I’d like to think that I am always prepared with a quick exit, especially when it comes to potentially very temperamental bull moose (too many close calls will make sure you’re prepared). Luckily both bulls didn’t pay us any mind, they were just enjoying the beautiful day playing in the snow.

As we clicked into our cross country skis, two bull moose appear from the trees. They walked together in search for food and sometimes they would pause to play fight with each other. Their paddles would clash together, it’s noise would echo throughout the first. They checked us out as we clumsily took off our skis (in case we needed to get in the car really fast, moose can be temperament) and continued on their way. They walked in the track for an hour, pausing to eat and play. We slowly skated behind them as they didn’t pay us any mind.
