Today’s feature takes us into the rainy streets of Toronto through the lens of street photographer Kajeh Mehrizi @kajeh

A Fascinating Street

There is something about photographing through rain that changes the way a city reveals itself. Details soften, edges dissolve, figures become fleeting silhouettes, and the familiar begins to feel slightly unknown. Through wet and fogged windows, the city seems to exist somewhere between reality and imagination - blurred, mysterious, and quietly dreamlike.

I love how Kajeh puts his approach to photography into words: “I wasn’t really looking for a specific subject. I was looking for a moment - a story I knew nothing about, just an abstract glimpse of something passing by.”

Today’s featured collection, for Kajeh, began simply by observing the world through rain-covered glass. The water became a natural filter, transforming ordinary street scenes into something more abstract and poetic. As details disappeared, what remained were shapes, light, movement, and atmosphere, fragments of stories unfolding somewhere beyond the glass.

The rain turns reality into abstraction, dissolving the city into shapes, reflections, and fragments of light. There is poetry in what remains unexplained in those fleeting figures and half-seen stories. Each photograph feels cinematic like a frame taken from a film already in motion. We arrive somewhere in the middle, knowing nothing of what came before or what will happen next.

Through Kajeh’s lens, the rainy streets of Toronto become somewhere between the real and the imagined.

The Space Between

I have returned to Kajeh’s photography again and again since first discovering his photographic world. What continues to intrigue me is the remarkable diversity within it, perspectives shift, visual languages evolve, and unexpected elements continually enter the frame.

Perhaps this openness is one of the most precious qualities of Kajeh’s work: a photographic world that never settles into a single way of seeing. There is a beautiful sense of freedom in that philosophy - giving the work space for curiosity, experimentation, and creativity, while remaining open to possibilities yet to be discovered.

Throughout more than thirty years behind the camera, curiosity has always been with Kajeh from the very beginning. His parents gave him his first analog camera when he was twelve, followed by his first digital camera at sixteen. Seeing the world through a viewfinder and constantly trying to see it differently fascinated him, and that instinct has stayed with him ever since.

As a visual artist who has worked professionally across animation, photography, and design industry, Kajeh naturally brings different ways of seeing into his photographic practice. Photography has remained an important means of expressing himself as an artist and exploring how he experiences the world around him. At the heart of Kajeh’s work is the relationship between human presence and the environment.

When asked how he would define himself as a photographer, Kajeh gave me a wonderfully open answer: “At this point, I don’t really like to place myself in any specific category of photography. I simply try to capture anything that catches my attention.”
