An evening that could only make sense in a secret Newport speakeasy.

Prof. Shane Barter took us inside the unsettling world of Buddhist extremism. Prof. Richard Foss explored how food scholars reconstruct the tastes, rituals, and recipes of civilizations long gone. Dr. Jill Tupitza brought us back to the present with a conversation about climate change, demographics, extreme weather, and pollution.

Then, naturally, a combat helicopter pilot and the cult keeper of Charlie Sheen’s allegedly stolen piano faced off in a dueling-piano performance—culminating in a room-wide rendition of “Piano Man.”

Ideas were challenged. Wine was consumed. Polite society survived another evening of questionable behavior.

This is what we’re trying to build in Orange County: a little culture under a neutral banner, where curious people can gather, disagree freely, laugh loudly, and still leave as friends.

Money won’t buy your way in. Conversation will.

Be vulnerable. Ask the hard questions.
Pet the dog.
