$Part 2 will cover applying this lesson to dividing fractions. Learn dividing by fractions in less than 2 minutes. This video is meant to help parents help their kids. It's not meant to teach people who already know how to do it. In this script we cover the "flip and multiply" method. First we build a quick foundation of what arithmetic is and use that to reframe division in a way that I think is more helpful for kids when they approach fractions. I then show what a reciprocal is and how to find one. Then we "scale it up" by multiplying to get our answer. If you'd like me to cover other topics please DM or comment! ------ [Step 1 – Operation family context] Think of math operations as ways to help us count forward or backward: Addition means count forward: 4 + 3 = 7 Subtraction means count backward: 7 - 3 = 4 Multiplication means add the same number over and over: 3 x 3 = 0+3+3+3 = 9 And division - the opposite of that - means take away the same number repeatedly until we hit zero. So 10 ÷ 5 means how many times can I take 5 away until I hit zero? [Step 2 – Reframing division] Division is really asking is:

How many or how much of the divisor fits inside the total? This will help us understand division by fractions. [Step 3 – Simple fraction examples] Take 1 ÷ ½. How many halves fit inside 1? That’s 2. Or 1 ÷ 1/3. It's three. [Step 3.5 – Introduce reciprocal] You'll notice that the answers here are the flipped version of the fractions: These flipped versions are called reciprocals because they undo each other — multiply or divide, and you get back to 1. This applies to every fraction! [Step 4 – Apply to a general fraction (6 ÷ 4/5)] 6 ÷ 4/5. First, think about just 1 ÷ 4/5? How many 4/5 fit inside 1? The reciprocal gives you the answer: 5/4. That means 5/4 of those fractions fit inside 1. Well if 5/4 fit inside 1, how many would fit inside 6? So we multiply by 6: 6 × 5/4 = 30 / 4. And that’s your answer. 1️⃣ Flip the fraction to find its reciprocal — that tells you how many fit inside one. 2️⃣ Multiply to scale it up. That’s why we say: ‘flip and multiply.’$
