Back in Guatemala for the animals! 🐕

🌺I had a meaningful experience serving at Animal A.W.A.R.E with @bu_mspl again and with more members of @baylor_prevet !

🌼Although coming back I was overwhelmed to see that there were more dogs with the same amount of resources and minimal amount of adoptions, I was so proud of prevet for coming prepared and fundraising over $1000 to go to supplies to donate to the animal shelter.

🌸We also combated the problem of being unsure of how many dogs were being sheltered there by tagging every single kennel and photographing every animal so that not one is left behind. We are now in the process of cataloging those animals in a database system where it will be easier to identify each dog for the potential of being adopted one day.

💐I took home the message that our small actions each day such as grooming a couple mated dogs, or giving flea and tick prevention to some puppies are still making a difference in those animals lives despite how big the animal shelter is.

♥︎ I am so blessed that I got the opportunity to serve at Animal Aware the only animal shelter in Guatemala- home to over 300 dogs and 30 cats. Even though they are taking in dogs almost everyday, they have very limited resources and workers. I did not realize the condition in which these animals were in, however, I have seen God work in so many incredible ways this week. By showing kindness to these animals I got to see the difference we made and how happy we made these animals.
Colossians 3:12

♥︎ What really impacted me was when we found a terribly emaciated dog with cancerous tumors (slide 8). We believe that the shelter didn’t catch this because of the very few workers that they had. Even with all the resources in the world it probably was not able to be restored back to normal health. Because of this, we had to make the difficult decision of euthanizing her last Wednesday. I am so glad that she is in a better place now in Heaven and that she was able to pass while we comforted her. She didn’t have a name so we named her Mariposa (butterfly in Spanish).

♥︎ Before this trip I knew that animal shelters especially, animal aware needed dire help because of their low adoption rates. But actually going on trip and seeing these animals in person gave me a whole new perspective of shelter medicine. Hopefully in the future as a vet, I will be able to help out more shelter animals around the world.

♥︎ If you are able to adopt or donate, check out their website: https://animalaware.org/ to learn more able their work and the animals staying there.

♥︎ TYJ for these incredible people I traveled with, the animals, the people at the shelter and for Guatemala! 🇬🇹

Soft Tissue Surgery is DONE 👏🏻 Thank god for having such a great group of people to be living at the hospital with ❤️ Saw so many cool things and the previous wanna-be surgeon in me was very happy! Plus getting patients that you keep for more than just one day was fun to really get to know them and their families, including my superstar Rectal Pull-through patient Polo! Reverse side: I. am. tired. Very ready for a rotation that I can get a full nights sleep on 😴

✨ FOSTER FEATURE✨
Meet Sparky 🐶 Sparky is a 7 year old male Maltese mix looking for his forever home! ❤️

“This is Sparky! I am fostering him thru Fishtails Rescue. Sparky was abandoned at BluePearl in south Philly by his owner, but luckily @fishtailsrescue stepped up! He is a 7 year old Maltese mix who enjoys ~the finer things in life~ and would love a home either where he’s your one and only, or with pals his own size! He has PLE and will be on meds the rest of his life, but he takes them with no problem. He’s a fun lil guy who needs a home!!!! Check out his petfinder page: https://www.petfinder.com/dog/sparky-53032648/pa/philadelphia/fishtails-animal-rescue-pa1060/“

If interested in adopting Sparky or want more information on him, please send us a message!
