Kalissa Jacomen is a rising junior at Serra Catholic in Pennsylvania. The 5-foot-4 outside hitter and defensive specialist also plays for Allegheny Volleyball Club. She outlined her journey in this Digging Dish.
“I started playing when I was 13 years old, my eighth grade year, all because of my stepdad,” she said. “He helped me fall in love with the sport and game of volleyball and has always been there for me cheering me on as my biggest supporter.”
She has been a threat on the pins.
“For the most part, I did always play the same position as an outside hitter,” she said.
She wants to play college volleyball and is making a position change to better her odds of finding a spot on a roster.
“I know from my height, I may seem a little on the shorter side, but I can definitely still get up,” she said. “However, using the last two years of my high school career to continue on someday to play college ball, I have been progressing into a new position as a defensive specialist and leaning out of just hitting. On that note, playing college volleyball has absolutely always been a big dream of mine, one that someday I will absolutely accomplish, whether it’s my dream place or somewhere else.”
She enjoys being on energetic teams.
“My favorite aspect of playing volleyball has to be the energy of a good game and team because no matter what happens, if it’s a win or a loss, a high energy team with great chemistry and sportsmanship will always come on top for me,” she said.
She trains to get better.
“I do lots of training at home and on the side at little clinics for touches in between seasons, which is something I 100% recommend for younger players and athletes,” she said. “But another thing for me that has helped a lot is being in the gym, especially with my vertical.”
She offered words of wisdom.
“My biggest advice to younger athletes is to never give up on what you truly want,” she said. “Keep working and keep pushing, I promise you’ll get there.”
