Today I celebrate my birthday, I’m sitting back reflecting on many things, so much has happened since the beginning of the year , I want to highlight the @sanquentinff film festival held at CCWF two days ago. Before I go on.. I want to say how honored I am to have been invited and honored to have attended. I’m equally honored and thankful my short film together with director @stevenravenliangfilms was shown here… as a man who is formerly incarcerated who spent a quarter of a century incarcerated in California maximum security prisons I have an intimate understanding of how that experience can and does impact a man, of resources that only a couple of years before my release in December of 2019 started to trickle into men’s prisons in California, like education, arts and other programs as I saw it then and understand it today an attempt to re introduce life to a population on American soil, who long before me, systems as old as America and as American as apple pie built the prison system in America which regardless of the reasons people/ politicians may say, what the purpose of prisons are for, and how humane we attempt to say they are, actually disconnect anything, anyone from life itself to a base level…. My point being, this was my first time I entered a woman’s prison and let me add it’s not just any prison, it’s the prison in the UNITED STATES with the LARGEST number of incarcerated WOMEN and it’s in the United States and in California. As I walked in, talked to numerous people, including I talked with many of the incarcerated women I was shocked at the level of inequality/ disparity when it comes to funding programs at the women’s prisons compared to men’s prisons. I’m still asking myself WHY? What I did see in endless supply at Chowchilla like I did when growing up inside men’s prisons was and is the massive human potential, talent and creativity. An example is the writer and actor @tinyyydrama whose film sooo Boom is playing in the festival’s. I love her film 🫶🏼 So as we end International Women’s Month I want to thank @sanquentinff and everyone who made the event possible and the women of CCWF. #women #prison #disparity #inequality #humanity

🎞️ DEBUT FILM SCREENING: “POUNDCAKE”

Born and raised in Liberty City, Kamal Ani-Bello’s journey is a powerful example of what happens when talent meets opportunity — and when curiosity turns into purpose. Kamal stepped into the entertainment industry at just 13 years old, gaining early recognition as a child actor in impactful projects including Moonlight, David Makes Man, and major McDonald’s campaigns.

But his story didn’t stop in front of the camera.

After being invited to work as a personal assistant to director Jamal Hill on a feature film, Kamal discovered a deeper passion for storytelling behind the scenes. He went on to work as a production assistant on multiple sets, absorbing every detail of the filmmaking process — from vision to execution.

🎥 That hands-on journey led to the creation of his first short film, “Poundcake” — a milestone moment we’re honored to showcase at this year’s summit. Kamal is now expanding his creative voice even further with his current sci-fi project, “SHELLE,” proving that his imagination and ambition know no limits.
