World building is the foundation of a good story. It allows the viewer to immerse themselves in the narrative created by an individual. The possibilities of doing this are endless. There are so many different ways of showing the breadth of one.

Melancolour gives the audience a chance to decipher its past, the tragedy that befell society as we know it. The breadcrumbs are scattered in the background of every frame. To be Dystopian, you must earn that through meticulous world building - and that is what Melancolour does!

We need your help, though. Donating as little as five pounds goes far in the creation of Melancolour. On top of that, any independent film. It enables us all to tell the story in the manner they deserve. Most of these narratives would never see the light of day, were it not for the generosity and belief of people like yourselves.

Some B&W photographs from our scout in Wales. We travelled from the industrial South in Cardiff all the way to the Northernmost top in Rhyl. Over the course of the weekend, we spent valuable time bonding as a crew as well as exploring and learning the rich history of Wales.

A scout from the incredible Guildford Studios. A big inspiration for the backstory of Melancolour’s collapse. The atmosphere of decaying military machinery suits the underlining themes of the film. The rusting presence of governance in humanity.

#melancolour #shortfilm #indie #military #surrey

Meet Kameron Calvert-Davies, the producer on Melancolour. He’s a London-based filmmaker and student of the London Film School, where he recently wrote and directed his graduation film, Residual Sky. Having accumulated credits on more than 20 productions spanning narrative shorts, documentaries, and music videos, he has developed experience across directing, producing, and cinematography.

His work is driven by a fascination with the human condition, particularly how ordinary people respond when pushed to their emotional, moral and psychological limits. Drawn to socio-political storytelling, Kameron aims to create films that challenge audiences to engage with pressing social issues, exploring themes such as displacement, identity, inequality and humanity’s relationship with the natural world. His filmmaking strives to balance grounded realism with cinematic ambition, creating stories that encourage reflection and social discourse.

On Melancolour, Kameron serves as the chief producer, overseeing every stage of production from development through to delivery. Working closely with the cast and crew, he ensures the production runs smoothly while maintaining the creative vision, logistical organisation and collaborative environment necessary to bring an ambitious independent film to life.

Melancolour peers into a world stripped of colour, where everything is in sepia, and desperate humans have been reduced to scavengers. Following two in particular - Leo and Coen - we wander through a mix of nature and desolate industrial landscapes. The dregs of what once was humanity. Amidst their search for food and supplies, Leo and Coen stumble upon an abandoned farmhouse, where they discover something unfathomable to any in their circumstances. Something that breaks what residual sanity they have left.

Surreal, dark, and meditative, the viewer will feel boxed in the aspect ratio of 4:3, leaving them as entrenched as the characters. With minimal dialogue, the narrative is told through its cinematography and physical performance. The sepia will provide harsh contrast between light and shadows. Imposing wides will blend with intimate closeups when needed.
