A few weeks back the Wellington crew had Faye and Fran from FFStop in for a talk.

They had us all taking some analogue images on a disposable camera.

@ffstop_photos Faye and Fran are known for their collaborative approach to capturing analogue portraits of local Wellingtonians.

“We value connection, conversation and experimentation over the perfect photo: values which come to life through our public art projects, at local creative events such as Parking Day and Toi Pōneke art market.”

Those who tuned in last Thursday were treated to an open and enlightening chat with UK Photographer @sarahcresswellphoto and AIPA President @kanefeaver

Massive thanks to you for being so gracious with your time and valuable insights, Sarah.

Sarah shared some some simple ways to be more sustainable and inclusive in our productions, practice and personal growth.

Her honesty and vulnerability were greatly appreciated and testament to her authenticity. We’re positive many photographers resonate with what she has to say and find her inspiring regardless of whether you have a similar mindset or are just starting to think about sustainability.

Sarah also spoke about the pull from both sides of the industry - wanting to make a living but being conscious about your work’s impact, leaving us with 3 key takeaways:

1/ Find like-minded crews - assistants, stylists, HMUA, prop who also want the industry and world to change. And who aren’t just going to sit around and accept things as they are.

2/ Speak more - start talking about everything from sustainability to anything else that matters to you. Don’t just accept everything that comes at you - talk about it. Have conversations with everyone and different industries, too, to see how they’re doing things

3/Approach clients who align with your values

As Sarah wisely pointed out, it just takes education, small steps and doing what you can, where you can because you can’t be the solution to every single problem.

Ka mihi atu ki a koe Sarah.

As the year comes to a close, let’s take a look back at some of the highlights from AIPA. We kicked off with the Womenswork exhibition, which was a great success thanks to founder @victoria.baldwin and @briarpacey

Members enjoyed workshops and webinars on Adobe Lightroom, generative AI, business strategies and more. Creative buckets were filled to the brim with presentations and portfolio viewings.

We welcomed new faces to our team, farewelled some old friends, and announced our new president and vice president. We also launched a mentoring program and partnered with Skar Image Lab and Auckland Camera to offer some fantastic benefits to our members. Looking forward to 2024, we plan to stage an exhibition, host exciting local events, and initiate training for assistants in Wellington.

It’s been a big year, and we’re excited for what’s to come.
