My dearest,

There is something almost sacred about watching a mother and daughter share a stage.

A mother spends so much of her life standing behind her child—fixing the anklets, remembering the costumes, carrying the worries, wiping the tears, celebrating the little victories that no one else sees. And then, one beautiful evening, she gets to stand beside her daughter beneath the same lights.

What a beautiful way for all those years of love to come full circle.

I have had the privilege of knowing you not only as a mother, but as my student. I have watched your dedication, your discipline, your love for this art, and the quiet ways you have poured yourself into your daughter’s journey. And on that stage, I could see that none of it had been for nothing.

You were not simply dancing beside your daughter.

You were dancing beside the little girl you had watched grow.

The little girl whose first steps you encouraged.
The little girl whose dreams you protected.
The little girl who once looked to you for everything, and who now stood beside you as an artist in her own right.

And perhaps that is the most beautiful part of motherhood—to spend years teaching your child how to find her wings, only to one day watch her fly beside you.

There are moments in a mother’s life that words cannot hold. I imagine this must be one of them.

Because an Arangetram is never only the story of the dancer. Behind every confident smile is a mother who sacrificed. Behind every polished movement are years of patience. Behind every moment on that stage is a thousand moments that happened quietly, when nobody was watching.

And I hope you know that those moments were seen.

I saw them.

I saw your love in the way you showed up. I saw your pride in the way you watched her. And I saw the tenderness between you both when the music began and, for a little while, the whole world seemed to disappear.

Some mothers give their children roots.

Some give them wings.

You gave your daughter both.

And what an extraordinary gift it was to witness the two of you turn all those years of love into something as beautiful as dance.

May you always remember that stage—not because it was the night your

My dearest Aarabhi,

There are some moments as a teacher that feel bigger than the stage itself. Watching you perform your Arangetram was one of them—but watching you share that stage with your mother made it something I will carry in my heart for a very long time.

I have watched you grow, not only as a dancer, but as a young woman. I have watched the hesitant steps become confident ones, the movements become more expressive, and the dancer I once taught slowly become an artist who could tell a story without saying a single word.

But on that stage, I saw something even more beautiful.

I saw a mother and daughter walking through years of love, sacrifice, patience, and dreams together—and somehow, all of it was spoken through dance.

Every adavu, every mudra, every glance carried a little piece of the journey that brought you both there. And as your guru, it was incredibly moving to stand back and witness two of my students become each other’s greatest partners.

One day, you may not remember every step you danced that evening. You may not remember every song, every entrance, or every moment under those lights. But I hope you always remember what it felt like to look beside you and see your mother there.

Because not everyone gets to share a stage with the person who first taught them what it means to dream.

And not everyone gets to watch their mother become their fellow artist.

That is a gift you will carry far beyond this Arangetram.

I hope, years from now, when life becomes busy, you look back at these moments and remember the little girl who began dancing, the mother who stood beside her, and the guru who had the privilege of watching it all unfold.

You made me incredibly proud—not simply because you danced beautifully, but because you danced with your heart.

And perhaps that is the greatest thing a guru can ask for.

May you never stop dancing through life with the same grace, courage, and joy you brought to that stage.

With all my love and pride,
Your Guru

A little glimpse from my Arangetram, shared in celebration of Krishna Janmashtami 🦚💙 Performing the Charukesi Varnam, Innum En Manam, a piece and choreography that will always hold such a special place in my heart and remain one of my favourite pieces I’ve ever performed. Forever grateful for this beautiful memory. 🙏🏽✨
