THE ENDLESS LIE

The iconic film The Endless Summer (1966) has long been seen as the starting point of surf-trip culture, and the story goes that during that journey around the world, Bruce Brown and his mates introduced surfing to the African coasts for the first time.

But what they never said is that when they arrived at Labadi Beach in Ghana, there were already surfers there. Lying on pieces of wood or standing on canoes—surfing already existed. Why did Brown, Hynson, or August never admit it? Wouldn’t it have been more honorable to tell what they actually found there?

Surfing may be as old as humanity’s relationship with the sea. We’ll never know who was first, but it likely emerged naturally and independently, in different parts of the world.

Imagine a fishing community thousands of years ago. To reach open water, they must cross dangerous breaking waves—requiring skill and deep knowledge of currents, sandbanks, and reefs. On the way back, they use the waves to reach shore faster, in full control, with their catch intact. They are surf masters.

Meanwhile, on the beach, children play at being fishermen. Using broken canoe pieces, they head into the water, learning the skills to handle the shorebreak and then return sliding on a wave.

The stoke every surfer experiences on their first wave is the same all those children felt for thousands of years. No child would stop chasing it—unless someone forbade it. And that’s exactly what happened when colonization erased ancestral cultures and traditions—and with them, surfing.
