Cilappatikaram: a tale of love and betrayal, joy and sorrow, virtue and injustice.

At its heart is Kannagi, an ordinary woman whose unwavering sense of justice transforms her into an extraordinary force. A woman who challenges injustice, brings an entire city to its knees, and ultimately transcends mortality to become a Goddess.

@kapilavenu as Kannagi left the entire theatre spellbound. Every movement, every expression, every emotion was brought alive with such intensity that the audience sat in awe.

Bangalore eagerly awaits her next performance, but this portrayal of Kannagi will remain with us long after the curtains have fallen.

As a child, I have heard umpteen stories of Kovalan and Kannagi. And one fine day , about two years ago, I read a splendid English translation of Silappadhikaram or Cilappatikaram. It was poetic , that brought everything to life. The translation was by French Indologist Alain Danielou.
Yesterday @rangashankaraofficial i witnessed @tripudi___ 's production , written and conceived by @soorajijk .
It is important to bring such old texts to life . This particular Tamil text was written by Ilango Adigal,somewhere in the 5th or 6th century. Ilango was a prince who became a monk .
@soorajijk as Kovalan and @kapilavenu as Kannagi just warmed my heart.
I first saw Kapila perform Narasimhavatharam at the Sangeet Natak Academy premises in Delhi years ago. She just blew me away .
And then @kalamandalamrajeev and his extraordinary mastery over the mizhavu.
How a story comes to life , isn't it incredible!
Each actor performing his or her role to perfection and with complete surrender.
Such performances feed my soul and no wonder that I came from Mysore a day before .
An afternoon well spent .
Art is the only constant!
Congratulations to the entire team 👏🏿
My head is reeling . Rightfully so.

Some performances are watched. Some are felt deep within the soul.

Yesterday, I witnessed Kannagi and found myself completely overwhelmed. Under the direction of Sooraj Nambiar, with his masterful portrayal of Kovalan, and the extraordinary Kapila Venu as Kannagi, the performance transcended theatre.

One of the greatest lessons I continue to learn as an artist is that growth comes not only from performing, but also from watching. It is through experiencing the work of fellow artists, across forms and traditions, that we learn to appreciate, reflect, and find inspiration. Moments like these remind me how blessed I am to live a life enriched by art.

The moment Kannagi entered in the fierce form of Bhadrakali, I had goosebumps. By the end, I was in tears.

When the entire team came on stage after the performance, the audience rose to their feet in a spontaneous standing ovation—a heartfelt tribute to an ensemble that had given us something truly extraordinary.

This is not a memory I will simply remember; it is one I will carry in my heart for the rest of my life.

Kudiyattam or Koodiyattam was conceived over 2000 years ago in Kerala. It is the oldest surviving classical Sanskrit theatre tradition .
Today , I witnessed Cilappatikaram , an ancient Tamil text by Ilango Adigal,written in the 5th or 6th century. He was a prince who became a monk .
@rangashankaraofficial , the stage was set for the artists to commence their act.
I have been reading the English translation of this text for over two years now ! Unfortunately, I cannot read Tamil .
But ,@tripudi___ ,this play premiered in 2025 . It is the tale of Kannagi and Kovalan.
More about the text later . The stage is set . My eyes are glued to the stage .
One of my most favourite artists @kapilavenu adorns the role of Kannagi .

This Monday morning, as we ease into the week, we wanted to share a beautiful and heartwarming moment.

Our colleague, Anisha Parameswaran, was part of the 134th batch of Navarasasadhana – Phase I conducted by Guru G Venu at Irinjalakuda, Kerala.

As part of Navarasasotsava, the presentation series led by Guru G Venu, Anisha performed the Bajan Sri Ramachandra Kripalu Bhajamana, choreographed by Sheejith Krishna.
