This month marks 10 years of alopecia for me :) At 13, for the first time after shaving my remaining, departing hairs, I begrudgingly let my mom take this uncovered, bald photo of me — I don’t think it’s ever seen the light of day until now! As I reflect via Instagram caption, I know there is much to be said in the realm of beauty standards and the very strange social experiment that comes with looking different from everyone around you. But I really just wanted to come on here, to this app full of content that often conflates vanity with confidence, and emphasize that there is absolutely no confidence like the kind that comes from knowing you’re a loving, resilient, brave and capable person.
