EXMO is thrilled to be back for its third year, presenting another season of weird and wonderful experimental music here in Oxford! We are delighted to announce our first concert of the year will bring composer/performer Kari Watson to St John’s on Thursday, 19 November, 2026 for the UK premiere of Fuse, a work for analog modular synthesizers and programmed drum machines. After an opening set of free improvisation by Kari and Zack Di Lello, Kari’s work, Fuse, will combine modular synthesizers, a quadraphonic speaker array, and unhoused speaker cones distributed throughout the room to create a live spatial audio sound sculpture which makes the unsettled boundary between body and environment audible, asking where the performer ends and the surrounding system begins. Follow the link in the bio to reserve your free ticket, and we hope to see you there! @kari__watson @zackdilello @stjohnsox

August and September were mainly spent chained to my desk, finishing my PhD - I am looking forward to sharing some writing on risk in new music creation further down the line! Emerging now to a very intense month of music learning, starting with covering three roles in Phillip Venables, Ted Huffman and Sarah Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis @royalballetandopera In November I return to Rainy Days festival with @unitedinstrumentsoflucilin_ to workshop and perform four new student compositions as part of their composition academy. @philharmonie_lux And then a collaboration very close to my heart - a beautiful new work for voice, electronics and film by my wonderful friend Kari Watson, commissioned by HCMF. We can’t wait to share this with HCMF audiences in November ❤️ @kari__watson @hcmfuk If you see me out and about, send me back to my metronome please…

What does it mean to perform vulnerability—and who gets to control the gaze? In 'A Grammar of Distance', composer Kari Watson @kari__watson and performer Rosie Middleton @hmrosiehm explore the body’s potential for recontextualization via electronic, musical and theatrical interventions. Originally titled The Masks We Wear, the 45-minute monodrama considers the different forms of masking that shape performance: from vocoders and lighting cues to the internal strategies a performer uses to navigate the demands of a work. Drawing on their shared interests in embodiment, vocality, identity and the politics of performance on marginalised bodies, Watson and Middleton explore how these devices can explore agency and create conditions that allow the gaze to be directed, controlled and manipulated. Created for and with Middleton, 'A Grammar of Distance' receives its World Premiere at hcmf// 2026 on 21 November. Read Tim Rutherford-Johnson’s full profile and discover more about the work at the link in our bio. Artist Spotlight: Kari Watson @kari__watson + Rosie Middleton @hmrosiehm How do we come to understand and negotiate intimacy, vulnerability, and inter/personal distance? Kari Watson’s ‘A Grammar of Distance’ explores these questions through voice, performance and electronic sound, moving between fragments of interior and exterior worlds as it explores the idea of relationality. Created in close collaboration with mezzo-soprano Rosie Middleton, the work is driven by shared experiences related to identity, embodiment and the politics of performance on marginalised bodies. Through electronic intervention, Watson and Middleton explore how the body can be recontextualised — and how this can shift ideas of power and agency within performance. Presented in the industrial surroundings of Bates Mill Blending Shed, this World Premiere brings together two highly collaborative artists in a work that sits at the intersection of contemporary music, performance and electronic sound. 📅 Saturday 21 November, 3pm 📍 Bates Mill Blending Shed 🎟️ Standard £20 // Solidarity £26 // Kirklees Resident £18 // Under 30 £6 Link in bio Photo Credit: A Grammer of Distance (still) Kari Watson © Ashleigh Dye Rosie Middleton A Grammer of Distance (still)
