So... how do we feel about AI anime? 🤔

Maybe it’s a more blurry line when AI is used for work where realism isn’t the intention in the first place but pure fantasy. To achieve this kind of film involves the creation of storyboards and sequences of visual narrative — which is really what a director does in a large budget anime production. the execution of those storyboards, the translation into hundreds of hand drawn frames, is usually carried out by teams of production artists. So has the filmmaker here circumnavigated the hard grunt work labour, or used the technology to become the director?

The result? The short itself from Karim Youssef is gorgeously cinematic — grand gestures, atmospheric swirling storms and sabres throughout. That was envisioned and realised. Great stuff. I’m genuinely curious how the anime enthusiasts among you feel about AI being used in a process that is famously, laboriously hand made.

This trailer was the original plot to “Nexus” until I pivoted to the animal wet market story after spending 2 months on this 😭

So the full feature film of Nexus is probably 30% similar to this trailer plot but this is probably the type of science focused trailer that could win the X-Prize!

If you’re excited to see more fantasy creatures, that’ll be coming back in the next few months, we’re just writing the feature script to Nexus with a big writer, and prepping for weekly short films showing this universe.
