Egyptian short film ‘Khufu’, directed by Mahmoud Assi, has won the Pardino d’Argento Arts3 Foundation for the International Competition at the 79th Locarno Film Festival.

‘Khufu’ celebrated its world premiere at Locarno after being selected for the Pardi di Domani International Competition. The film follows an Egyptian family living near the Giza Pyramids whose livelihood comes under threat when their camel, their only source of income, develops serious health problems.

The short centres on the emotional and financial pressure placed on the family as they try to preserve their livelihood, using their relationship with the camel and the landscape around the pyramids to explore resilience and family ties.

‘Khufu’ is co-produced by Mark Lotfy and Abdallah Dnewar, the latter known for the award-winning short ‘My Brother, My Brother’.

The award forms part of Locarno’s Pardi di Domani section, which is dedicated to short and medium-length films by emerging filmmakers. The Pardino d’Argento Arts3 Foundation carries a prize of CHF 5,000.

Before its Locarno premiere, the project also won the first edition of the Eish Competition, an initiative developed by the United Nations World Food Programme in Egypt, El Gouna Film Festival and Zest.

We are honored and deeply blessed to announce that KHUFU has won the Silver Leopard at the 79th Locarno Film Festival, in the Pardi di domani International Competition. 🐆

To receive this honor at the film’s World Premiere is something we could never have dreamed of.

KHUFU has been a long journey of crafting, collaboration, patience, and belief. And for director Mahmoud Assi, this is his debut film, making this recognition even more special.

We couldn’t have wished for a better beginning for KHUFU.

A heartfelt thank you to the Locarno Film Festival selection committee for believing in the film and giving it a place in this incredible competition, and to the Pardi di domani jury for this extraordinary honor.

And to everyone who joined us on this journey, contributed to the film, supported us, and believed in this story from the very beginning, thank you. This recognition belongs to all of you.

This one is for all of you. ❤️
