We presented a reading of Territori in Perth at @theblueroomtheatre on Wednesday. I can’t quite believe it happened. The casting was particularly challenging, as I’m not based in Perth and my characters spoke with Singlish/Manglish/Australian accents. One character had to be cut because we couldn’t find somebody.

In 2 weeks, we casted, edited the script, ran rehearsals, did the surtitles, sold out the event, and even printed a very pretty flyer.

This reading was also the first time the play has been presented to an audience who included Christmas Islanders, some of whom are friends and others who had read about it on Facebook. You could imagine my nerves!

Thankfully, they offered very encouraging words, and I met a 5th generation Islander who cried watching the presentation because it reminded her of her late grandparents. 😭 There were also helpful questions that will help with further rewrites.

Thank you @centreforstories for organising this for me, you knocked it out of the park.

With each presentation that I do, I feel honoured to share the histories, grit, and resilience of Christmas Island and Islanders to more and more people. Here’s hoping for a longer future for this play - in Christmas Island, Perth, Singapore and beyond.

➡️ Notes on the cast in the comments.

The work flow is far from glamorous but this is how we structure our shoots regardless of how big they are or how many products we’re working on.

3 hours of inputs = a shit load of content 🤳🏽
