"I first discovered the Yangshuo karst through a photo shared by one of my @500px subscribers. Curious about the location, I reached out, and they kindly provided the exact spot (huge thanks to them!).

To capture the shot, I had to wake up in the middle of the night, climb a rocky peak, and negotiate for a spot among dozens of Chinese photographers already set up with their tripods. The scene was backlit, making exposure tricky to manage.

At the time, I wasn’t very experienced, so I didn’t use any special techniques—but my tripod proved invaluable. Beyond the photos I captured that morning, which remain some of my most satisfying and well-received, what stays with me most is the breathtaking beauty of the landscape, illuminated by truly incredible light."

The largest of the medina's several tanneries, Chouara is one of the city’s most iconic sights (and smells). Operating since at least the 16th century, the area was heavily renovated in 2016, but the scene, viewed from the surrounding balconies, remains remarkably medieval. It's striking to see the hard physical labour that goes into the butter-soft, elegant leather goods sold in the surrounding workshops. Try to get here in the morning when the pits are awash with coloured dye.
