Where else would we be?

One year ago today, Karsyn and I were in a car accident that changed our lives forever. There are things we go through that divide our lives into a “before” and an “after,” and that day was one of them.

We both survived, and for that I will always be grateful. While many people saw us walk away, they didn’t always see everything that came after. For me, that included recovering from a traumatic brain injury and learning to navigate challenges I never expected to face. The healing process is not easy, and there were and are still many days that test me physically, mentally, and emotionally.

As I look back on this past year, I am incredibly thankful for every person who supported us through our living nightmare. To our families, friends, healthcare providers, and everyone who checked in, prayed for us, and stood by our side, thank you more than words can express. Your love and encouragement carried us through some of the hardest moments of our lives. Your patience and understanding throughout this journey does not go unnoticed. Recovering isn’t just about the physical wounds. It’s learning to navigate the effects of trauma and PTSD, which often show up in ways that aren’t always visible. Thank you for giving us grace on the difficult days, for listening when we need support, and for standing by us as we work through challenges that many people can’t see. Your patience, love, and understanding means more than you’ll ever know.

This experience has also shaped me as a healthcare worker in ways I never could have imagined. Being a patient and experiencing firsthand the fear, uncertainty, and vulnerability that can come with healing gave me insight for the kind of care I want to provide. It has made me more empathetic, more understanding, and more committed to being the best I can be for my patients.

Karsyn, I am so grateful that we’re both still here. What we went through changed us forever, but it also showed us the strength we didn’t know we had. One year later, we chose to focus on gratitude for our lives, our growth, the people who carried us through, and the opportunity to live another beautiful day on this earth. I love you forever Kar Kar 🤍
