@perch_chennai theatre collective, famously adapted the works of legendary Malayalam writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer into the acclaimed English-language stage production Under the Mangosteen Tree.. 17yrs old legacy that I dint miss on its farewell at chennai @afmadras..

@krishdayal anna was the key identifier for me to make it to this show.. thanks to you so much.. as a theatre artist shaking hands with you were my best feel.. ☺️🤟

The central, brilliant element of the play features Basheer himself (portrayed by actor Paul Mathew) acting as the narrator, participant and the you were the centre of focus of the show day sir.. 🙏

The non-linear narrative touches upon tales like Mathilukal (the prison-wall conversations with Narayani) the unknown face..

Another show stealer.. Bhargavinilayam (the interaction with a young girl's ghost)..

The big-nose competition, and other vivid accounts of ordinary people, mystics, and outcasts.. It was a Thestre Theatre experience..

Sharing a small piece I captured from my heart as a theatre enthusiast

Under the Mangosteen Tree, a farewell tour after 18 years. I’m glad I finally made it @karuna_amarnath. Had forgotten how apt many of those Malayalam words are, will now use frequently ha ha. The entire cast, the music, costumes, and the Vaikom Muhammad Basheer tribute, all a pleasure. Can’t wait to see what comes next with this team from @theperchchennai. Two shows left in Chennai on Sunday and then on to Kottayam. For those in Chennai, drop by the cafe downstairs @vandoughindia for whisky- and rum-flavoured coffee before or after. But if it’s jackfruit chips, biryani, copra and jaggery you prefer, @kckfoods is a minute away.

“Theatre is the perfume of life.”

Theatre has been such an integral part of my life. There is something about being on stage—the magic, the spontaneity, the thrill of the unknown—that continues to give me the enthusiasm to be on screen.

And then there is Basheer.

I have played so many of his characters over the years that, somewhere along the way, they have become a part of me. His life, his philosophy, his way of looking at people and at the world have found their way into my own way of living.

Perhaps that is what theatre does. You don't just play a character, you carry a little of them home.

Come share this journey with us one last time.

The One You Don’t Want to Miss. 🌿

After nearly two decades of performances across stages and cities, Perch, Chennai’s much-acclaimed Under the Mangosteen Tree is now on its farewell tour - and we’re absolutely delighted to bring it to Kottayam.

Inspired by the unforgettable world of writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, the play brings together his humour, tenderness and wonderfully human stories. There is going to be something particularly special about watching Basheer’s stories come alive right here in Kottayam, the place he called home.

Tickets are out on thepurplecrayons.com! (Yayy!) Link also in bio.
