POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We kicked off spooky season at Spark Books earlier this month with @karunariazi and @onedarkally. We talked about how Ally sometimes scares herself when writing, ghost encounters, and ate delicious snickerdoodles.

Ally Russell’s latest book is Mystery James Returns from the Grave

Karuna Riazi’s latest book is A Bit of Earth.

Ally and Karuna thanks for the wonderful discussion. 👻

After our trip to Maryland last weekend, my winter and spring travel have come to an end. The travel started out with a lot of promise and adventure, but after Nox's unexpected passing...I just wanted to be at my home with sweet little Fury. However, I still made it out into the world to see family, book friends, and readers.

Here's a quick look back at everywhere I've been since February, including TX, MO, MD, and all across PA. To the teachers, librarians, young readers, parents, and bookstores who hosted me for events—thank you for the invites. And for those who encountered me after April 30, thank you for bearing with me as I adjusted to a different way of life.

I'll be spending the next few months at home with Fury, Nyc, and Kellen. We'll grill, sit on the deck, watch birds, read, bake, and probably play Mario Kart. It's also time to get back to writing.

Today I attended the Pittsburgh Book Festival ( @pghbookfest )and had the BEST time. 📚✨

As someone who has always loved both reading and writing, it was really special to spend the day surrounded by so many people who share that same passion. Sometimes when you’re writing, it can feel like you’re off in your own little world, so being in a space filled with readers, writers, and book lovers was a nice reminder that there are so many people out there who get it.

I got to attend Flirting with Romantasy, Know Your Fantasy Lore, and Wings and Whimsy: Cozy Fantasy, along with hearing from some amazing authors, including @jennifermandula @sarahbethdurst @mir.benitz & more. Every panel gave me something new to think about, whether it was worldbuilding, fantasy tropes, publishing, or simply why we love stories in the first place.

I honestly went for the vibes, the books, and the chance to be around other people who love storytelling as much as I do. I left with an active mind, new ideas, and feeling more excited to write than I have in a long time.

As someone currently working toward finishing & publishing my debut novel, days like today remind me why I started writing in the first place. 🖤

Thank you to Pittsburgh Book Festival for putting together such a wonderful event. I already can’t wait to come back next year.

Secret Garden Inspired Book Recs!⛲️🌱🗝️

{•} These are a little more middle grade heavy, but hey! A good middle grade book can hit in a way that YA or adult doesn’t!! Gallant is such a good example of this! It’s a little eerie and I loved it!

Have you read "A Bit of Earth" by Karuna Riazi? 🌱

Andrea W. recommends it: "After her parents' deaths, Maria arrives in the United States by way of Pakistan and Bangladesh with a reputation for being...prickly. With some extra care, perhaps she (and the abandoned garden she finds) can grow in this modern retelling of The Secret Garden."
