Ian Kashamba is a Ugandan comtemporary visual artist working with painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. He used his residency to explore the murky depths of human subconscious which he refers to as the void. His time in residence helped him recognise that there can be community even amidst loneliness.

✨Our #OpenStudios last weekend were a blast! ✨

Friday started out rainy but that didn't stop you from showing up! The enthusiasm carried into Saturday, and it was such a joy to see children from the neighborhood and beyond interact and play in the garden.

Ethel @ethelaanyu88, Ian @kashaphillips, Joachim @ogwadojoachim and Sandra @knivesandcolours are overwhelmed with gratitude and renewed energy after all the enlightening comments and conversations around their work.

As we prepare to say our goodbyes to this cohort and help the new one settle in, we're reminded of how special it is to be a gathering space for community of artists and art lovers 💚

“MY GRANDMA HAS A HAND IN THIS. WE NEED YOU.

… …

Kashamba’s art is a tap into the void.
An invitation into the crowded and blurry world of subconscious vision.
A lonely world we avoid for the order of waking life but cannot ever really hide from.
Deformity, or human ugliness, is a truth he shows with the crushing heaviness of his intentionally mad canvas. Matter is used to allude to a space where there is none,
an infinite vastness where our fear is a uniting emptiness, A VOID.

Kashamba asks, “Who is the human in this? What are we escaping from
with all these incomplete lies? Why are we suppressing certain ancestral energies?
Why are we not studying our ugliness and shame?
Where does what we see with closed eyes come from? What is sleep really?”
He uses abstraction and heavy expressive placements to let the beholder
find a home through acceptance of what disturbs us; our temporary destructive tendencies, our unease with the distance between who we believe we are, and who society wants us to be. His work further laments the rejection of introspection, escapism that plunges us into conflict and destruction from within.

He presents our collective fears to us, a Jungian thing, presenting an opportunity for unity
and an invitation to us to live more consciously.
His art challenges us to be good in the face of looming bad.
That yes, indeed we can harmonise our limited observations and definitions into
a beautiful madness we inhabit. An unknown that we sustain.

This residency has made him more willing to affirm his loneliness, to transcend
the identities that society ascribes and instead see what is universal. He hopes to continue to be in community with everyone who embraces life in all its shades. Ultimately, nobody knows; but with our creative energies, thoughtful endurance and freedom to express our individual, mysterious vital force, we will keep getting better.
This is an invitation to freedom. Live. You can be so much more if you’re open to the greatest canvas, THE VOID.”
