I’m absolutely delighted to share that the poster I designed for BRU (originally written by Josh Martin, workshopped by Sandi Dlangalala and Mikey von Bardeleben), recently staged by Vigilante Theatre, has been shortlisted for the Theatrical Posters - Armenia International Biennale (TPAM)!

I’m honoured, thrilled and extremely, extremely, EXTREMELY grateful to be seen for my design work in this way. To know that I’ll have one of my posters exhibited at an International Biennale is very rewarding in itself, and to be shortlisted amongst a global cohort is humbling 🫀🌟

Thank you once again to Hayleigh Evans and the team at PopART for the opportunity to make BRU, Vigilante Theatre and the BRU team for saying yes to the vibes and Josh Martin, for allowing us to restage and redesign, a real honour 🏄🏻‍♂️🌊

South Africa to the world, BRU! 🤙🏻

BRU - A lesson in adaptation, revival, a deep dive into South African pop culture during the Zuma Years and finding the inner Bru 🇿🇦 Off the back of a good run of Peeling Shadows last year, I came across an old and dusty script I had first read back in my university days at Wits, Josh Martin’s BRU (2011), first performed by Sandi Dlangalala and Mikey Von Bardeleben.

As I saw it, I remembered the fun times I had rehearsing performing an excerpt from this play for an exam with Shannon Leibach, a good friend, but I then wondered… could I direct it? What did the weird and wonderful world of 2011 KZN offer me as inspiration? I knew I needed a co-director/co-conspirator to help me, and after a mesmerising lunch at Fournos, it was decided… From the depths of the ocean, Vigilante Theatre would revive BRU!

This was my first time ever adapting a work, and I have to say, it really opened my eyes further as to what theatre really is… no one can revive a film, they simply screen it again… no one can revive a song, they do a cover, but a play, a play is revived because a play has a life all of its own, it’s own soul, crafted by all the hands that play a part in making it… and reviving this work made me realise that it’s true, every play has its own unique soul, it tells you how it needs to be made. This play needed a whacky, goofy, playful and ever endearing South African charm that made me fall in love with South African Slang (which is mass produced in Durbz I’ve discovered) South African music, our quirkiness and it required me to embrace our vibrant sense of humour. South African Comedy is kinda goated, so like, let’s not miff out about it hey… I think South African theatre needs to revive some fringe golden oldies that have sadly been forgotten and buried. But hey… all treasure is buried, no?

A massive thank you to PopART for the opportunity to present the work, all the amazing collaborators on this amazing show, it brought out my inner surfer dude and I’m delighted to know there will be more runs, more adventcha’s and definitely some waves to catch along the way. Shot BRU!

March - A fitting end to quarter three, a kaleidoscopic month of multitude’s, filled to the very brim with friends, plays, readings, new collaborations, old faces on a new journey, friends returning from abroad, memories once buried resurfacing, creative momentum, looking back to move forward, expanding my horizons, illustrating, mastering Canva, writing, boxing, new experiences, painting, building, laughing, getting lost in the Bru of it all, feeling, reading, giving grace when I needed it the most, homesick for a small town named Utsunomiya, Shōdō masterclasses, matcha tea ceremonies, hugs, stories, plotting on the next few projects, movies, acknowledging, paying homage to the journey and learning. Sheesh! “When we can play our little part, help others find their voice, hopefully, we can go to bed with a quiet heart.” - Dario Doneda. Deeply grateful for this amazing month, and everyone who’s played their part. This month was one for the books. Thank you all who came, all who stayed, those who witnessed and those I’ve journeyed with. Horizons are appearing. A voice, making itself heard. The art of life unfolds as we become… stay tuned!

February - What a year this month has been! A busy, fun-filled, insightful and explorative month. Shows, rehearsals, reconnections, new connections, boxing lessons, thrift stores, writing, writing, writing, therapy sessions, intimacy, wrapping up my first ever animated film (WOWZA) family dinners, becoming a regular at Pantry, returning to my old high school to give back, applications, rejections, bargains, deals, successes and chances to reassess, wrestling with comparison (and stumbling into a little of bit regret again) coming to terms with a past I never wanted, a future that slipped by, another chance to get it again and learning to love all of it at once. “Amor Fati” - to love one’s fate, one’s circumstances that aren’t fun at all. We’re getting there. We are constantly negotiating with our dreams and goals, failures and successes, our joys and our traumas. There is gold amongst the rubble and ruins of our lives… if only we are brave enough to dig deep enough and find it.

“BRU” follows Gazza & Googs, two young troublemakers who just can’t get enough of surfing, bunking school and enjoying a good bunnychow. To teach these two a lesson on discipline, their parents send our two surfers off to a fate worse than death: Boarding School in Johannesburg.

Fed up with city life and a serious lack of waves, Gazza and Googs escape and set off for Durban.

Originally written and directed by Josh Martin and performed by Sandi Dlangalala & Mikey Von Bardeleben in 2010, “Bru” made it’s debut at the National Arts Festival, where it enjoyed runs in 2011, 2015 & 2016, performed at the Fame Festival at the Joburg Theatre and won the Audience Favourite Award at the Musho! International Theatre Festival in Durban.

“Bru” returns to the stage to tell the story of Gazza and Googs in an exciting and experimental style, directed by Martin Grendele & Joël Leonard. Originally performed as a twohander, this bold reinterpretation is performed by Langa Mathuthu, Oliver Ché Naidu, Hlumie Moloi & Sasha Karlin. Blending physical theatre, shadow puppetry, illustration and projection, this imaginative staging promises to delight audiences as they follow the hilarious exploits of Gazza and Googs!

Bru’s, Brunettes, Non-brunaries, those who identify as Bru/Brah, Vigilante Theatre have a really frikken shweet show for you okes coming up this March as part of PopART’s NEXT DRAFT programme at the Space.com 🤙🏻 bring sunscreen, some shades and good vibes as we join Gazza and Googs in their radical quest to escape Jozi, eat bunnychows and ride the waaaaaaaaaaaves of life, bru 🤙🏻🏄🏻‍♂️🏄🏾‍♂️🌊

Tickets are R150.00 bucks online or at the door. Check you there! Oriiiiiiiiii bru 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻

January - Mampara Month for who?! Birthdays, celebrations, drawings, community, rehearsals on rehearsals, two staged readings, much, much needed reunions, good time with good people, the profound productivity in promoting and posters, lighting design, writing, short films, swimming at Zoo Lake Swimming Pool, bearing the unbearable heat, creative pathways unfolding, therapy sessions, lessons learnt, lessons landing, applications on applications, illusions, massages, fixing my car, remembering where I come from… how far I’ve come. How far I want to go. Thank you January and all the good people I’ve spent it with… here’s to shooting for the stars and resting on the moon.

As part of the ScriptTease programme , comes a reading of Gross indecency , the true story of a very big queer part held in the forest town , 1966. a police raid let to a stringent new homophobic law ( part of the Immortality act ) and infamous “ 3 men at a party “ clause - not unlike the house arrest laws by hat considered 3 people or more as a crowd - who could be arrested for homosexual acts .

SCRIPT TEASE offers productions (or writers) and audiences the opportunity to be in dialogue before work is put on the floor. Additionally, it offers audiences a window into various processes, as well as the chance to experience work that is otherwise difficult to mount. Readings are followed by a dialogue with the audience.
